The Kansas City theater scene celebrated local talent at the 2024 BroadwayWorld Kansas City Awards, recognizing outstanding performances and productions from the past year. This annual celebration recognizes the incredible talent and creativity bursting out of our local theater scene. From regional productions to touring shows, the spotlight shone brightly on performances that captivated audiences between October 1, 2023, and September 30, 2024.
This year, the awards expanded their reach even further, with over 100 cities from America, Canada, Central and South America, and even Europe and Asia joining in the celebration. A grand showcase of talent, storytelling, and, of course, spectacular performances! So, let’s dive into some of the outstanding winners that left us applauding.
A big shoutout to Amanda Snead, who took home the award for Best Choreography of a Play or Musical (Non-Professional) with her fabulous work on In The Heights at Springfield Little Theatre. On the professional side of things, the dynamic duo of Jerry Jay Cranford and Christina Burton impressed the judges with their work on Newsies the Musical at New Theatre. Their choreography made the stage come alive!
When it comes to costume design, Patricia Berning wowed the audience with her creativity for Anastasia: The Musical at Theatre in the Park. Her hard work earned her the award for Best Costume Design (Non-Professional). Meanwhile, Francie Kapono-Kuzila dazzled the audience with her stunning costumes for The Rocky Horror Show at Padgett Productions, clinching the Professional category.
Let’s not forget the masterminds behind the scenes! Amanda Snead was once again recognized for her brilliant direction of In The Heights, taking home the Best Direction of a Musical (Non-Professional). Not to be outdone, the talented duo of Nick Padgett and Katie Gilchrist earned accolades for their direction of Stranger Sings! at Padgett Productions, winning Best Direction of a Musical (Professional). Teamwork truly makes the dream work!
Strong performances came together in a fantastic ensemble for In The Heights, earning them the title of Best Ensemble (Non-Professional). For the professionals, the ensemble cast of Newsies at New Theatre Restaurant kept hearts racing and spirits high, securing the win in their category.
Recognition was also given to individual performances. Tyler Simpson stole the show with his wonderful portrayal in In The Heights and won Best Performer in a Musical (Non-Professional). Melissa Webel showed off her amazing skills in The Sound of Music at Maples Repertory Theatre, taking home the Professional award. Talk about stars in the making!
