Kansas City Embraces Sunflower Season with Must-Visit Fields and Family Fun

Kansas City Welcomes Sunflower Season – Here’s Where to Go!

As we roll into September, Kansas City is buzzing with excitement as sunflower season is officially upon us! That’s right—these stunning blooms are taking center stage in the Sunflower State, and you can bet your social media feeds are going to be filled with bright yellow petals and cheerful smiles. Whether you’re hoping to capture that perfect Instagram shot, pick some sunflowers to brighten up your home, or just enjoy a fun-filled day with loved ones, there are plenty of spots to check out. Let’s dive into some of the best sunflower fields in and around the Kansas City area!

1. Grinter Farms – A Local Legend

First up is the iconic Grinter Farms, a sunflower haven where the blooms have been thriving for over 40 years. Originally starting out as a source of birdseed, Farmer Ted Grinter’s fields now attract thousands of folks each year. Come weekday to avoid the crowds and really enjoy the beautiful scenery. Just keep in mind that these glorious flowers typically only bloom for about two weeks, so make sure to plan your trip! Best of all, Grinter Farms is located at 24154 Stillwell Road in Lawrence and is free to visit, though they do appreciate donations to help keep the farm thriving.

2. Annie’s Sunflowers

If you’re closer to Millville, don’t miss out on Annie’s Sunflowers. Open every day from dawn to dusk until the blooms fade, this sweet spot is just about 8.5 miles northeast of Richmond. The sunflowers have been looking spectacular lately, so it’s an excellent opportunity for a lovely outing. Donations are accepted via Venmo or through a donation box on-site, making it easy to give back while enjoying nature!

3. Big Shoal Farm – A Newer Gem

Looking for something fresh? The Big Shoal Farm is a delightful addition to the sunflower scene, officially opening its sunflower fields in 2020. This seven-acre farm, created as a partnership between the City of Gladstone and the Friends of the Atkins-Johnson Farm and Museum, offers not only sunflowers but also sweet corn and pumpkins as well. What’s even better? Admission to the fields is free! You can find this charming spot adjacent to the Big Shoal Cemetery on Old Pleasant Valley Road.

4. Johnson Farms – Family Fun Galore

Celebrating 23 wonderful years in the Kansas City metro area, Johnson Farms offers a fantastic family-friendly experience. Located at 17701 Holmes Road in Belton, Missouri, this family-run farm sets you up for a day filled with u-pick apples, sunflowers, fall flowers, pumpkins, and even the largest garden mum crop in the area! Be sure to check out their operating hours; you won’t want to miss this seasonal experience!

5. Lewis Farms – The Perfect Pick

Last but certainly not least, Lewis Farms is another great spot you might want to consider. Situated at 18100 Edgerton Road in Edgerton, this farm allows you to pick your very own sunflower blooms for a small fee. They often have pre-picked sunflowers available too, plus you can enjoy some seasonal mums and pumpkins later this fall! If all you want is to take photos, feel free to make a donation; they welcome it with open arms.

With so many fabulous sunflower fields around, you’ve got a perfect opportunity to grab your friends and family and head out for a day of fun under the sun! Just remember, these beautiful flowers don’t bloom forever. So pack up those cameras and get ready for a vibrant adventure in the great Kansas City area! Happy sunflower picking!
