Sponsor Our ArticlesKansas City is gearing up for an expansion of its streetcar service by March 8, 2025, enhancing public transportation just in time for major sports events. With four streetcars running at peak hours and additional cars dedicated to the KC Current games, residents can expect improved accessibility and reduced wait times. This new service coincides with significant events, including the Big 12 Men’s Basketball Championship. Despite temporary construction disruptions starting January 27, local businesses remain open, encouraging community support during this transition.
Love hopping on the streetcar in Kansas City? Well, get ready for some exciting changes coming your way! Starting on Saturday, March 8, 2025, the streetcar service is expanding to make your rides even easier, especially with some big sports events coming up!
That’s right! Four streetcars will be cruising along during the busy hours, bringing you to your destination every 10-12 minutes. Can you believe it? No more long waits as you make your way through the city. Whether you’re commuting to work or just exploring town, this new service is going to make your life a whole lot easier!
Do you root for the Kansas City Current? Then you’ll love the news! Five streetcars will be dedicated to running from Union Station to the River Market to accommodate the fans heading to the games. The expanded fleet kicks in approximately two hours before each KC Current match, so you can get to CPKC Stadium without a hitch!
Circle Saturday, March 15, 2025, on your calendar when the KC Current’s home opener takes place at 11:45 a.m. at CPKC Stadium. With the streetcar running in full swing, you’ll have no trouble getting there on time and enjoying the game.
The timing couldn’t be better as the streetcar expansion coincides with the Big 12 Men’s Basketball Championship, perfect for all you basketball fans out there. Get ready to cheer on your favorites and enjoy a smooth ride to the action!
There’s more good news for public transportation in Kansas City! A major milestone is on the horizon: the opening of the Main Street Extension, which will expand the route all the way south to the University of Missouri-Kansas City. Stay tuned for that development!
Don’t forget about the plans for the Riverfront Extension, set to open in 2026. This extension will take you north to CPKC Stadium and potential new developments along the stunning Missouri River. Talk about a scenic ride!
Before all this excitement, there will be a temporary suspension of downtown KC Streetcar service starting January 27 for about two weeks. This is to wrap up construction work on the riverfront extension. But not to worry! RideKC buses will be stepping in to help you get around during this period.
With construction brings some necessary detours. Grand Boulevard will be closed from Second to Third until the end of April. Additionally, Third Street from Grand Boulevard to Walnut Street will also close starting January 27, while the Grand Boulevard viaduct will wrap things up with closures from the end of February through April for some track work.
Despite the construction buzz, businesses in the River Market area are still open and accessible. So, while you’re waiting for the streetcar to zip you away, consider stopping by and supporting your local favorites.
As of now, the riverfront extension is about 50% complete and has an estimated operational date of early 2026. With all these changes and additions, Kansas City is definitely on the move!
So, whether you’re a sports fan, a daily commuter, or just someone who loves exploring the city, mark these dates down and get ready for a smoother ride on the Kansas City Streetcar!
