Kansas City is preparing for some significant streetcar extension project closures beginning next month. If you rely on the KC Streetcar services, mark your calendars for these important dates.
Starting on September 9, the Berkley Parkway/Grand Boulevard bridge will close for a period of 60 days. This bridge connects the bustling River Market with the picturesque Berkley Riverfront Park, and crews will be hard at work making upgrades to accommodate the future streetcar line. During this time, access to the Berkley Riverfront will be limited, with the only route available being via North Lydia Avenue just south of the CPKC Stadium.
For sports fans, this closure could pose challenges, particularly with four upcoming home games scheduled at CPKC Stadium during September. Attendees should plan their routes carefully as getting to the stadium will require some adjustments.
The streetcar authority assures residents and visitors that the bridge will reopen in time for the much-anticipated NWSL Championship on November 23.
Later in September, another important closure will occur at the intersection of Pershing and Main Street, near Union Station, as the new Main Street Extension rail will be linked to the existing system. This particular project will necessitate suspending streetcar service for roughly three weeks. During this time, bus services will take over the regular streetcar routes, ensuring that commuters still have transportation options.
Looking ahead, residents can expect to see streetcars conducting test runs on the new track south of Union Station by the end of 2024. The track is slated to officially open for riders in 2025.
As the city undergoes these changes, staying informed and planning ahead is key for commuters and event-goers alike. Be sure to keep an eye on local updates as construction progresses!
