Winter Weather Hits Kansas City Area Schools Hard

In a chilly twist of fate, some schools in the Kansas City area are facing cancellation or delayed starts this morning. Icy road conditions are playing the villain in this winter saga, as several districts have decided to put the brakes on classes for safety.

Road Conditions and Safety First

Travel around the metro is getting tricky, with multiple roads closed because of the icy weather. The Missouri State Highway Patrol has reported several incidents, particularly near iced-over bridges, raising safety concerns for commuters.

Families in the area should also note that the 16th Judicial Circuit Court has adjusted its schedule and will open two hours later at 10 a.m.

School District Updates

Let’s dive into what’s happening with some of the local school districts:

Independence School District

In the Independence School District, classes are officially canceled. They’ve already used all five of their built-in inclement weather makeup days, totaling six weather days so far, with the sixth forgiven. This means they are nearing the limit for any additional snow days.

North Kansas City Schools

Down the road, North Kansas City Schools are facing a similar situation, having used all their built-in snow days and AMI days. They’ve opted for virtual learning instead, ensuring students can still catch up on their studies from home.

Kansas City Public Schools

Meanwhile, Kansas City Public Schools is slightly better positioned with one AMI day left. However, any additional snow days will need to be made up later in the year, which could lead to some busy days ahead.

Raytown Schools

Raytown Schools have also reached the end of their calendar snow days but still have three AMI days at their disposal.

Lee’s Summit R-7 School District

Over in Lee’s Summit, the R-7 district used its first inclement weather day last Wednesday and is currently keeping a watchful eye on the weather forecast.
