Kansas City restaurants faced disappointment as none made it to the final nominees for the James Beard Awards this year. Despite strong semifinalist presence, local favorites like Affäre and Drastic Measures failed to win recognition. In contrast, St. Louis chef Rob Connoley received a nomination, highlighting the competitive culinary landscape between the two cities. The upcoming awards ceremony in Chicago brings hope for future achievements in Kansas City’s vibrant dining scene.
In a rather disappointing turn of events for the culinary community in Kansas City, none of the local favorites made the cut for the final list of nominees for the coveted James Beard Awards this year. Despite having a strong showing as semifinalists, the seven restaurants and chefs from the Kansas City area that were in the running have unfortunately headed home with empty hands.
The only glimmer of hope for Missouri restaurants comes from the illustrious city of St. Louis, where chef Rob Connoley from Bulrush has been nominated for the title of Best Chef: Midwest. This shows that while Kansas City’s culinary scene was bustling with talent, it was St. Louis that made a mark on national stages this time around. Chef Connoley’s recognition underlines the competition heating up between these cities, both known for their vibrant food cultures.
This past January saw the Kansas City area chefs and restaurants grabbing attention as they all had been named semifinalists across various national categories. Among those was Affäre, a contemporary German restaurant nestled in the Crossroads, which stood proud with its nomination for Outstanding Wine and Other Beverages Program. Opened in 2012, it has carved a name for itself with its unique offering.
Another contender, Drastic Measures, known for its innovative cocktails in Shawnee, was aiming for the Outstanding Bar recognition, having already enjoyed being a finalist in 2023. Not to be overlooked, chef Jeff Workman of The Campground was a hopeful candidate for Best Emerging Chef, making headlines with his transition from executive sous chef at Corvino Supper Club.
The Kansas City culinary scene also showcased four talented chefs vying for the Best Chef: Midwest category. They included Romain Monnoyeur of Westport Cafe, Katie Liu-Sung of Chewology, Johnny Leach of The Town Company, and Rozz Petrozz of Saltwell Farm Kitchen in Overbrook. While all these chefs had their eyes on culinary glory, they too fell short this year.
The official Awards Ceremony is set for Monday, June 10, in Chicago, where the brightest culinary talents will be celebrated. Kansas City restaurants may not be walking away with awards this time, but last year was a different story when Yoli Tortilleria brought home the award for Outstanding Bakery. It’s a reminder that the Kansas City culinary scene is loaded with potential and promise, ready for a grander showing in the future.
Meanwhile, just a bit farther west in Wichita, the food scene was making waves of its own. The annual Wine Spectator magazine released its Restaurant Awards list, which recognized six Wichita restaurants. Although one restaurant fell off the list, it was replaced by a past winner, keeping the integrity of the previous year’s accolades intact. This year, a total of 3,777 restaurants were honored from all around the globe, showcasing just how robust the culinary world is right now.
Wichita’s Wine Dive + Kitchen celebrated its third consecutive year receiving the Best of Award of Excellence. The list included other impressive establishments like Scotch & Sirloin, Vora Restaurant European, and 6S Steakhouse. On the Kansas City side, restaurants like 801 Chophouse and Sullivan’s Steakhouse snagged awards, contributing to a thriving dining scene.
The full list for the Wine Spectator awards will be published on July 9, leaving food enthusiasts eager to see which local spots will bask in the spotlight next.
It has been a challenging year for Kansas City’s culinary community, but the nominations and reflections of talented chefs remind us that the future holds exciting opportunities for local eateries.
