Kansas City, Mo. — In a sad turn of events, residents are reeling after the tragic shooting of 44-year-old Ebony Davis on Thursday night at 34th and Garfield. This heartbreaking incident unfolded just east of 71 Highway, leaving the community searching for answers and ways to prevent such violence from happening in the future.
The Kansas City Police Department reported that the shots were fired from outside of a vehicle, and tragically, Ebony Davis lost her life that night. The news has shocked many in the community, especially considering the increasing concerns surrounding safety in that area.
Following the incident, a local resident reached out the next day to inquire about the response to the 911 call made just before the shooting. A look into the sequence of events revealed that a call was made at 8:12:50 PM, with the Kansas City Police Department’s automated system calling back shortly after at 8:13:18 PM. A second call was recorded just moments later and the caller was placed in a queue for nearly a minute before they were able to speak with a dispatcher.
By 8:15:14 PM, the caller was transferred to the Kansas City Fire Department for emergency medical services. The ambulance eventually arrived at the scene by 8:21 PM, approximately nine minutes after the initial call was placed. It’s a stark reminder of how critical every moment is during emergencies.
The aftermath of the shooting has left many residents disturbed and concerned. Two individuals from the Mount Sinai Missionary Baptist Church, just four blocks south of the incident site, shared their thoughts with reporters. Youth Director Margaret Brooks expressed deep sorrow for Davis’s family and emphasized the importance of reaching out to support them during this difficult time. “I’m very sad, and I would hope that we can reach out to the family and provide some comfort,” Brooks said.
Another church member, Pamela Woodcox, noted that incidents like this don’t come as a surprise to those familiar with the neighborhood’s struggles. “This area has quite a bit of crime in it,” she stated, reflecting the fears many residents have about safety.
In light of these ongoing challenges, Brooks revealed that the Mount Sinai Missionary Baptist Church is launching a new initiative called the Teen Outreach Program (TOP). Designed to empower local teens, the program aims to educate them on conflict resolution, self-expression, and ways to prepare for college, all in an effort to foster a safer and more supportive community. “It’ll teach them therapy, conflict resolution, how to prepare for college, how to express themselves without outbursts,” Brooks explained.
The church’s efforts reflect a dedicated push toward not only disrupting the cycle of violence but also nurturing young minds, equipping them with valuable life skills.
Authorities have reported that, as of now, they have no one in custody related to this tragic event. They urge anyone with information regarding the shooting to reach out to the TIPS Hotline anonymously for a potential reward of up to $25,000 for information leading to an arrest. “If you know anything, please don’t hesitate to contact us,” officials say.
Kansas City continues to rally together in these trying times, hoping for peace and a sense of security as they work to support one another and find justice for Ebony Davis. The community’s strength will undoubtedly play a critical role in healing and fostering change moving forward.
