Kansas City Landlord Sued Following Raccoon Attack on Tenant Due to Ceiling Damage

Lawsuit Filed Against Kansas City Landlord After Raccoon Attack

Kansas City, Mo. – A shocking incident has led to a lawsuit against a landlord in Kansas City after a group of raccoons fell through a damaged roof and attacked a sleeping tenant. This bizarre event happened on Valentine’s Day in 2023, and the aftermath is now the subject of legal action.

The Incident

Amanda Howery, aged 49, has filed court documents claiming her landlord, Sage Door Property Management, LLC, failed to repair a known issue with her ceiling. As a result, multiple raccoons invaded her bedroom while she was asleep, leading to a distressing attack. The terrifying encounter not only caused injuries but also required her hospitalization.

Negligence Allegations

The lawsuit filed in Jackson County Circuit Court accuses Sage Door and its parent company, SC REI, LLC, of **creating dangerous living conditions** due to their negligence in maintaining the property. Howery states that her prior complaints about the ceiling went unaddressed, putting her safety at risk.

Seeking Damages

Howery is seeking compensation for a range of hardships following the incident. Her claims include:

  • Past and future medical expenses
  • Lost wages and diminished earning capacity
  • Emotional distress and pain and suffering
  • Mental anguish and disfigurement
  • Loss of enjoyment of life

Howery is requesting at least $25,000 in damages as she seeks justice for the trauma and financial burden that resulted from the raccoon attack.

The Company’s Response

Sage Door Property Management, based in Blue Springs, has been contacted for a statement regarding the lawsuit, but no response has been provided at this time.

Conclusion

This unusual case underscores the importance of timely maintenance and safety in rental properties. As developments unfold, both the landlord and the tenant are likely to face closer scrutiny regarding their responsibilities and rights in this unsettling scenario.
