Kansas City Siblings Join Forces to Save Public Transit Amid Funding Scare

In Kansas City, siblings Brian and Sarah Jones have stepped into the spotlight, becoming passionate advocates for public transit just when their city needs it the most. The duo relies heavily on the local bus system, a lifeline that connects them to work and essential services. With potential funding cuts on the horizon, the pair is rallying support to keep these services operational.

Transit Troubles on Route 9

Sarah, who lives a mere block away from Route 9, takes this bus repeatedly throughout the week. It’s more than just a means of transportation; it’s a crucial connector to her job and important appointments. The news that Route 9, along with 12 other bus routes, could face the axe has her concerned. She’s worried about how people, especially those who depend on public transit to make a living, will cope if these services are cut. It’s a genuine fear reflecting the reality for countless residents in Kansas City who use these buses to navigate their daily lives.

Outpouring of Support

City Council Acts

$78 million to the Kansas City Area Transit Authority (KCATA). This significant funding aims to resolve some immediate concerns surrounding the transit operations. Additionally, Kansas City has proposed a new ordinance that would pump another $46 million into KCATA, potentially covering operating costs from May through October. As this new proposal is set to be thoroughly discussed during an upcoming Finance, Governance, and Public Safety Committee meeting, it’s drawing widespread attention.

The Bigger Picture

$2.5 billion, with $314.5 million targeted for housing and community development. Out of this, $77.8 million is set aside specifically for KCATA’s operations. Yet, even with these commitments, there still exists a daunting $32 million budget shortfall for KCATA, prompting fears of potential job layoffs and reduced services.
