Seeking New Representatives: Kansas City Public Schools Board of Directors Opens Applications for Board of Equalization

Call for Representation
The Jackson County Board of Equalization, as a critical part of the local governance structure, requires representation from the Kansas City Public Schools system. To this end, the KCPS Board of Directors is seeking an interested individual to serve as both a representative and alternate.
The work of the Jackson County Board of Equalization is particularly significant. It is an independent board comprising local taxpayers, responsible for equalizing the value of the county’s real and tangible personal property for taxation purposes. In addition to this, it provides a stage for taxpayers to lodge their appeals and address any perceived disparity in the assessment of value.
Appointment Timeline
The successful applicant will serve for a one-year term commencing July 1, 2024, through June 30, 2025. Within this period, they will attend Board of Equalization hearings to listen to appeals and make rulings on the valuation of real estate and business personal property within the KCPS district’s scope.

Those interested will need to submit their resume and application to the KCPS Office of Board Services. This paperwork can be mailed or emailed to Lisa Limberg at llimberg@kcpublicschools.org. The position holds rigorous qualification requirements as follows:
- Must reside within the Kansas City Public Schools district boundaries
- Must possess experience as a real estate broker, real estate appraiser, home builder, property developer, lending officer, or investor in real estate prior to their appointment to the board as per the Mo Rev. Stat §138.011
- Able to provide proof of current tax records and comply with the county ordinance that no member owes money to Jackson County, Missouri
Deadline and Selection Process
The deadline for submitting the application and resume is set for Wednesday, May 1, 2024, at 3:00 p.m. The KCPS Board of Directors will then conduct interviews in June and aim to complete its selection process by June 30, 2024.
