Kansas City Public Library’s Books-to-Go Program Celebrates 30 Years of Providing Free Books to Children

Kansas City Public Library Program Provides Free Books to Kids

Celebrating 30 Years of Literacy Empowerment

This year marks a significant milestone for the Kansas City Public Library’s Books-to-Go Program, celebrating its 30th anniversary. The program is dedicated to spreading a love for reading by providing nearly 7,000 free books each month to about 4,500 children in the Kansas City area.

Bridging the Literacy Gap

In classrooms like Korte Elementary, teachers are thrilled to have access to new books through the Books-to-Go Program. Bobbie Jones, a preschool teacher, expresses her passion for teaching children to appreciate literature. “My most favorite part is teaching kids to love books,” she shares. For Jones, the program means a lot because it helps fill the gap in literacy resources that many children face.

Importance of Early Reading

According to Jones, fostering a love for reading not only supports literacy development but also boosts vocabulary and contributes positively to overall academic achievement. “Even when they’re babies, they should be read to,” she emphasizes, highlighting the importance of early exposure to books.

Creating Better Outcomes through Access

Brad Krohe, the program coordinator, reiterates the mission of the Books-to-Go Program. “It’s very crucial for us to bring the library to them,” he explains. By surrounding children with books, the program aims to create better life outcomes, encouraging a habit of reading that can last a lifetime.

The Joy of Real Books

While technology plays a significant role in education, Jones stresses the importance of physical books in her classroom. “I’m happy that we have technology, but it’s real books that I love,” she remarks, showing that the tangible experience of reading still holds a special place in her teaching philosophy.

Looking Ahead

The Kansas City Public Library’s Books-to-Go Program not only celebrates its rich history but also looks toward a bright future, aiming to continue making reading accessible to all children. Through this initiative, countless young readers are encouraged to explore new worlds and ideas, setting the groundwork for a lifelong love of books.
