Summer is officially arriving in Kansas City, marking the days of soaking up the sun by the poolside for families and individuals across the metro. Most of the area pools and water parks planning a grand opening over the Memorial Day Weekend may see a shift in their operation procedures or delays to their scheduled opening for the season.
In Kansas City, Kansas, a series of unfortunate events amass as vandals have significantly damaged Clifton Park’s splash park, stealing specialized parts requiring replacement. The city is hopeful to have repairs completed by mid-June. In addition, the Heathwood splash pad is currently undergoing essential repairs before it can operate safely. The city is actively collaborating with the company that installed the park to help speed up the process, although a specific timeframe for its reopening this summer is uncertain. Other city parks like Parkwood Pool and the city’s two other spray parks are set to be open Memorial Day weekend as planned.
Is any city ready to make a splash this summer, it’s Lenexa. The city leaders recently inaugurated the newly transformed Sar-Ko-Par Aquatic Center, which underwent a remarkable $15-million transformation. The splendid new facility offers a zero-depth entry pool featuring interactive features for young children, a lazy river, a competition/lap pool, and state-of-the-art resources like a deep-water alcove, diving boards, inner tube slide and speed slide. Beyond these, they’ve also introduced new family restrooms and opened an open-air admissions area. With additional parking spaces and a drop-off/pick-up loop leading to the pool’s entrance, the admission fees are $9 for residents and $12 for nonresidents, while entry is free for children two years and under.
Over in Missouri, the city of Blue Springs welcomes a brand new attraction, the Blue Surf Bay, a water park constructed with an investment of $35 million. The park includes a cool water lap pool with an attached rock-climbing wall, diving platforms and a warm water pool for aqua exercise, swimming lessons, and physical therapy sessions. Additionally, they have an indoor splash pad, water slide, steam room, and hot tub. As if this wasn’t enough, the adventurous lot can also look forward to an outdoor 40-foot tower with multiple slides, a wave pool, a lazy river, and a play structure.
After last year’s practice of allowing only Independence residents in the pool, Independence’s Adventure Oasis is making a crucial policy change. Everyone can enjoy the water park this season, but residents will need to provide proof of residency to avail the resident discount.
With these expected changes, Kansas City-area pools promise a thrilling summer to locals and tourists alike. So, grab your sun hats and bathing suits, and leap into the upcoming summer fun.
