Kansas City Unveils “Ornithology” Miniatures Celebrating Jazz Heritage

Kansas City Celebrates the Spirit of Jazz with “Ornithology” Miniatures

Kansas City is buzzing with excitement as local artist Willie Cole invites everyone to dive into the magical world of jazz through his latest work! Inspired by the legendary saxophonist Charlie “Bird” Parker since he was a child, Cole brings the sounds of bebop to life in a brilliant way.

A Classical Connection

As Cole reminisces, he shares that his grandmother was a huge jazz fan, filling his early years with the iconic sounds of jazz before rock ‘n’ roll swept him away into a different era. This early influence has clearly shaped his artistic journey.

“Ornithology”: A Tribute to Bird

At the heart of his creation is the art installation titled “Ornithology”, a stunning collection of saxophone bird sculptures suspended at the Kansas City International terminal. This enchanting title is not just decorative; it’s named after one of Parker’s most beloved compositions, honoring the saxophonist’s illustrious legacy.

What makes this installation even more special is its location. Crafted at the Boone Theater, a stone’s throw away from the 18th and Vine Jazz District where Parker once lived, the installation pays homage to the rich jazz history of Kansas City.

Recycling Through Art

Cole, who calls New Jersey home, is well-known for his unique artistic flair—his creations often embrace found objects and recycled materials. His previous works include sculptures made from pianos and guitars, showcasing his deep-rooted connection to music.

“I find myself improvising just like a jazz musician,” Cole explains. “In bebop, artists take existing chord structures and create something new. I take objects and mix them up to craft something that truly speaks.” This improvisatory spirit not only reveals his innovative approach but also enriches the narratives woven into his work.

Miniature Masterpieces

But that’s not all! Cole is now taking his talents to the next level by collaborating with the talented folks at B.A.C. Musical Instruments, the same company responsible for fabricating the saxophones in his airport installation. Together, they’re offering the “Ornithology” miniatures—small, brass-plated jazz birds that are sure to delight art and music lovers alike.

Available for just $50, these charming mini sculptures can be found at *Made in KC* stores and the *American Jazz Museum*. What a fantastic way to take a piece of Kansas City’s jazz spirit home!

Keeping the Connection Alive

While Cole’s professional contract with the airport may be long gone, his bond with Kansas City remains as strong as ever. He’s chosen to keep his studio based in the West Bottoms, drawn in by the city’s energetic music scene and rich history of jazz. He spends about a week each month in the city, soaking in the vibrant culture that continues to inspire him.

“I learn freedom of expression from music, and it influences everything I do as an artist,” Cole adds. It’s clear that Kansas City’s pulse beats in sync with his creative spirit, further emphasizing the city’s standing as a cradle of artistic innovation.
