A motorcycle driver is currently in dire condition, having fallen 35 feet into a railyard from a highway in Kansas City, Missouri. The terrifying incident occurred on a section of the elevated highway presently ongoing construction and modification.
The Kansas City Police Department reports that the accident happened shortly past 3 p.m. on Saturday, July 6. Responding to a call about a single-vehicle crash near the area of the northbound Highway 169 and Highway 9 intersection, emergency crews arrived at the scene to find signs of a high speed crash involving a blue Kawasaki motorcycle.
Police investigation reveals that the driver, whose identity is yet to be made public, was moving at a high speed along the 169 Highway heading north. Noticing too late the sharp curve nearing the Highway 9 exit, and with the road under construction and reduced to one lane, the motorcyclist lost control and smashed into a concrete barrier.
Coming immediately after hitting the barrier, the motorcycle and its driver continued traveling north, glancing off the barrier. The driver was then ejected and fell about 35 feet into a railyard below the highway. Fortunately, the driver did not land on the tracks.
Making the incident even more dramatic, a Union Pacific train was passing through the area at the time of the accident. The train operator was able to halt the moving train promptly after spotting the falling driver and immediately contacted emergency services.
The motorcyclist was rushed to a nearby hospital. Medical personnel report that the driver’s injuries are severe and life-threatening. Police investigations into the accident are ongoing, and further details will be released as they become available.
The section of the highway where the accident took place is currently under construction, with lanes reduced and marked with cones. Despite these safety measures, the accident still took place, raising concerns about the effectiveness of such precautions.
The unfortunate event serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of speeding, notably in areas marked for construction. The City of Kansas, Missouri, Police Department has urged drivers to adhere to construction zone speed limits and remain prepared for changes or disruptions on the road.
