As you walk through the colorful streets of Kansas City, there’s a special spot that’s turning heads for all the right reasons. It’s called Guevel, a cozy menswear store tucked away in the lively Crossroads Arts District. If you haven’t popped in yet, let me paint you a picture of what’s inside this little gem and why it’s making waves in the fashion scene!
Owner Cameron Niederhauser describes walking into Guevel as peeking into his own closet. Sounds fun, right? His in-house line reflects his personal style, mixing vintage vibes with modern flair. “We make a couple of shirts that are inspired by old, vintage pieces in my own closet,” he shares. And our man Cameron has thought of everything when it comes to fit. He jokes, “If you wonder why a jean fits the way it does, just look at whoever designed it.” And that’s the name of the game here — denim designed with his own frame in mind. It truly reflects how he wants men’s jeans to fit.
Originally, Guevel was named East + West when it opened its doors in early 2018. Back then, Cameron was taking a bold leap after spending several years with Baldwin, another local denim brand. After a brief detour into a typical 9-to-5 job, he decided it was time to infuse some serious Kansas City flavor back into the fashion world. “I wanted to weave a little bit of Kansas City into the fabric of fashion,” he said.
What sets Guevel apart is its dedication to quality. Instead of jumping on the fast fashion bandwagon, Cameron firmly believes in buying fewer, but better garments. The store mainly features apparel made from American, Canadian, and, yes, Japanese denim, which is like the crème de la crème of the fabric world. “The ethos is really just hard-wearing, casual men’s clothes that you can build a wardrobe around,” Cameron explains passionately. Don’t you love that philosophy? It’s all about investing in pieces you’ll treasure for years!
The in-house collection is not just about style; it also reflects the love Cameron has for Kansas City. He noticed how people appreciate unique local products and decided to embrace that. “People really appreciate when others take chances here,” he remarks. The aim was to create something that not only resonates with locals but catches the eye of folks in fashion hubs like New York and LA.
It all started when Cameron was just a teenager with a passion for fashion. “In college, I kicked off a blog about clothes with some buddies,” he reminisces. This would eventually lead him to Baldwin, where he soaked up the culture, learned the ropes of retail, and made valuable industry connections. But after some time in the corporate grind, that creative itch could not be scratched! So, in February 2018, he opened his own store, and boom! Guevel was born, marking a new chapter in his life.
Fast forward to recently, and Guevel has been strutting its stuff on the runway! Cameron showcased his winter collection at a chic event called Social Couture, benefiting Big Brothers Big Sisters of Kansas City. This fabulous night featured collections from various designers and was organized by some of KC’s finest entrepreneurs. “Social Couture was amazing,” Cameron gushes, emphasizing how great it was to contribute to a cause that matters.
If you’re on the lookout for stylish, high-quality menswear that tells a story and connects you to Kansas City’s bygone eras, Guevel is your go-to spot. With Cameron’s personal involvement and love for local culture, it’s a clothing line that truly stands out in a world full of fast fashion. So next time you find yourself in the vibrant Crossroads Arts District, make sure to stop by Guevel, where classic and contemporary unite!
Share in the excitement, and who knows? You might just find that perfect pair of jeans that feels like they’ve been made just for you!
