Kansas City Welcomes New Master of Legal Studies Program for Busy Professionals

Kansas City, MO – December 10, 2024

The University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) is launching a new Master of Legal Studies program, with applications currently open and classes set to begin in the Fall of 2025. This innovative 30-credit program will be held entirely online, targeting individuals who are looking to enhance their legal knowledge while continuing with their professional lives.

The program is designed specifically for working professionals who may not have the time or need to pursue a full Juris Doctor degree. Individuals in fields such as human resources, health services, or corporate compliance are expected to find significant value in this program. It also serves as a great opportunity for those looking to transition careers or expand their influence within their current roles.

Why This Program is Relevant

“Many people need to know specific areas of law but don’t have the time or desire to obtain a law degree,” stated Jeff Thomas, program director and associate dean at UMKC School of Law. “This program is designed to provide the information needed in a way that works for busy professionals looking for career advancement.”

Students will have the flexibility to choose from four specialized concentrations: health law, human resources law, compliance, and a general track. With this structure, students can complete the degree in as little as two years, allowing them to balance their studies with their existing job responsibilities.

Regional Significance and Economic Impact

Notably, the UMKC program is the only one of its kind offered in Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, or Arkansas, making it unique and particularly beneficial for residents in the region. Lou Mulligan, dean of the School of Law, emphasized the program’s relevance by stating, “We’re a hub for numerous industries and growing at a rapid pace. This degree will help develop a flexible workforce suited to continue moving the Kansas City economy forward.”

The asynchronous and part-time nature of the course allows students to access learning materials and complete assignments at their convenience, catering specifically to those juggling busy schedules.

Meeting the Needs of a Growing Workforce

This initiative aligns with the growing demand for professionals equipped with legal knowledge in various fields. As industries continually evolve and face new challenges, having staff who understand relevant legal frameworks is increasingly essential.

The Master of Legal Studies program at UMKC not only fulfills this need but also opens doors for career advancement for individuals seeking to broaden their expertise without committing to a lengthy law degree.

How to Apply

The UMKC School of Law is committed to fostering a rigorous educational environment that meets the diverse needs of its students while contributing positively to the regional economy, thus setting the stage for a dynamic and knowledgeable workforce.
