Jack Cooper Transport Company has announced it will lay off over 400 employees and close its operations in Kansas City following the loss of a crucial contract with Ford. The layoffs will affect various positions including yard workers and drivers, highlighting a broader trend of mass layoffs in the region. The Teamsters Union is stepping in to support affected workers during this transition, as the community grapples with uncertainty amid these significant job losses.
In a move that has sent shockwaves through the community, Jack Cooper Transport Company, LLC, has announced plans to lay off over 400 employees and close its operations in Kansas City. This decision comes after the company lost a crucial contract to transport vehicles for several Ford assembly plants, including the prominent Ford Claycomo Assembly Plant. The news was disclosed to state officials in a recent filing.
According to a letter addressed to the Missouri Department of Higher Education and Workforce Development dated January 6, a total of 352 positions will be cut by February 2. This number breaks down to 129 casual yard workers, 116 drivers, and 107 yard employees, all of whom will find themselves seeking new job opportunities in less than a month.
The closure will affect the facility located at 1240 Claycomo Road, which is conveniently situated next to the Ford assembly plant. This loss not only affects the employees directly involved but also has a ripple effect on the community as a whole.
The loss of this contract has raised questions about Jack Cooper’s future, as they have been a well-respected name in the automotive transport industry since their founding in 1928. The company is recognized as one of the largest privately owned auto transport and specialized vehicle logistics providers in the United States. Although Ford’s spokesperson has opted not to comment on the specifics of supplier contracts, it’s clear that losing such an important relationship has had a significant impact.
The Teamsters Union Local 41, which represents many of the impacted workers, is stepping in to defend their members. They are proactively working to support those who will soon be without jobs, ensuring that their rights are upheld during this challenging transition period.
The trend of layoffs is not isolated to just these companies. In fact, Kansas has seen over 3,500 people laid off due to mass layoffs and workplace closures in 2024 alone. The Kansas City metro area has been hit hard, with Tyson Foods announcing layoffs of more than 800 workers at its Emporia facility.
Under the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act, companies planning to lay off 50 or more employees from a single site are required to notify the appropriate authorities. In 2024, Kansas received a troubling 12 WARN notifications, affecting approximately 3,542 workers. Among these notifications, General Motors stands out with the largest layoff, impacting an estimated 1,695 employees.
As this unfortunate trend continues, workers in Kansas City—and beyond—are left grappling with uncertainty. The combination of these layoffs and the closure of significant operations not only affects the employees but also poses challenges to local economies that depend on these jobs. With various sectors, including logistics and manufacturing, also seeing reductions in workforce, the road ahead appears to be rocky.
As information becomes available and solutions are sought, the community’s resilience will certainly be put to the test. It’s a tough time, but support systems and unions are determined to lend a helping hand to those affected during this challenging transition.
