As the air fills with anticipation for an upcoming presidential election, Kansas City native Jesse Reyes-Lopez is playing a pivotal role in shaping the future of his community. The proud member of the Hispanic community was raised on the vibrant Westside of Kansas City, surrounded by family and the rich tapestry of Latino culture. Today, he serves as the Deputy Director of Advance for Vice President Kamala Harris, taking an active part in a historic chapter of American politics.
Jesse’s upbringing in a close-knit Mexican American family profoundly influenced his identity and passion for politics. He reminisced, “A lot of my family came from Mexico between the ‘30s and the ‘60s, so I’ve grown up on the Westside. That’s my area, and it’s home to me.” He later completed high school at Blue Valley in Johnson County before pursuing higher education in Atlanta.
In his role, Jesse coordinates everything from campaign events to rallies, ensuring the Vice President’s schedule runs smoothly. “We handle all of the Vice President’s campaign rallies, events, and fundraisers. Anywhere she goes, I plan that out with my team,” he explained. This includes working with various Secret Service protocols to guarantee the safety and success of each event. “We make sure that everything’s in place and ready for the Vice President and all the speakers, and afterwards we also handle the clean-up process,” he added with a smile.
Jesse’s journey into politics began back in 2016, ignited by the immense disinterest he observed among people regarding political engagement. He tells, “I had just finished college with a degree in political science. When [Donald] Trump was elected, I felt like I need to do more to get folks involved.” This drive is what led him back to work with Kamala Harris, a leader he admires deeply.
One of Jesse’s biggest challenges involves navigating political conversations within his family, particularly with his Catholic relatives who hold strong views on issues like abortion. “I try not to mix politics and family together. Family, I’m going to love them regardless of who they vote for,” he said, underlining his commitment to maintaining those vital family ties.
With Hispanic Heritage Month underway, Jesse emphasizes the crucial role of Hispanic voters in the upcoming election. He recognizes that while many in the Hispanic community, particularly Catholics, may have differing opinions on certain issues, understanding the broader platform is essential. “Look at her views, look at what she stands for. If she’s who you believe in, you might not have to agree with her on everything,” he advised, encouraging connection over division.
The most fulfilling part of Jesse’s work? The people. “Traveling the country and meeting people has always been one of my top joys. Seeing those who rally behind the Vice President excites me. Meeting first-time voters who are genuinely enthusiastic about voting brings me joy,” he expressed, highlighting the impact of community engagement in his journey.
For those aspiring to follow in his footsteps, Jesse’s advice is straightforward: “Start off volunteering. That’s where I started off—knocking on doors, passing out flyers, and phone banking. Just keep applying yourself and building connections.” He believes that passionate involvement can lead to great opportunities.
Jesse Reyes-Lopez embodies the spirit of community and resilience found in Kansas City. His dedication to service, connection, and advocacy showcases how one person’s journey can influence a broader movement. As the campaign heats up, this local star is determined to ensure that every voice is heard, paving the way for a more inclusive future.
