Kansas City is once again grappling with the aftermath of a tragic incident. A learned young man, just 21 years old, has lost his life following a shooting that occurred on the evening of Thursday, just before 9:00 p.m. The victim has been identified as Angelo Brayboy, whose bright future was cut short at a Phillips 66 Express Stop convenience store located in the 4800 block of Independence Avenue.
According to reports, law enforcement was directed to the scene following reports of gunfire. Upon arriving at the convenience store, police officers discovered Brayboy inside, suffering from serious gunshot wounds. Quick to act, they immediately began performing lifesaving measures, and shortly afterward, emergency medical personnel whisked him away to a local hospital. Sadly, he was pronounced dead not long after his arrival.
This shocking incident is being investigated as a homicide, marking yet another grim chapter in a location that has witnessed its share of violence. Preliminary investigations suggest that there was an altercation between two individuals just before the shots were fired, but the details of what sparked the argument are still being pieced together by detectives.
This latest shooting marks the fourth homicide at this particular convenience store just since the start of 2023. This is not the first time tragedy has struck the Phillips 66 Express Stop—previous homicides have left a mark on the local community as well. In March of this year, two men tragically lost their lives after an argument escalated, while another young man was killed during a dispute at the same location just months prior in November 2023.
The convenience store is fast becoming a troubling focal point in Kansas City. Observers have noted the bullet holes and marks on the store’s windows and ATM, echoing the chaos that has unfolded within its walls. Such violence not only affects those directly involved but sends ripples of fear and anxiety throughout the neighborhood.
Local community members, including employees of the gas station, have advocated for increased community support and patrols to help curb the ongoing violence. Feelings of heartbreak and frustration loom in the air as people seek ways to protect their community from further incidents like this.
