An artistic view of the Kansas City Healthcare Delivery and Innovation Building as it takes shape in the Health Sciences District.
The University of Missouri-Kansas City has begun construction on the $145 million Healthcare Delivery and Innovation Building. This five-story facility will enhance educational opportunities for medical and dental students while providing clinical services for University Health. Located in the Health Sciences District, the project aims to stimulate economic growth and improve healthcare services in Kansas City. With significant funding from state and community sources, the building represents a major investment in the future of healthcare in the region.
Exciting things are happening in Kansas City as the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) has officially started construction on a brand-new Healthcare Delivery and Innovation Building. This project isn’t just any run-of-the-mill construction; it represents a sensational leap forward with an impressive price tag of $145 million. This marks UMKC’s largest capital investment to date, and it’s already generating a buzz throughout the community!
The new building will stand tall at five stories and cover a whopping 160,000 square feet. Its prime location at the corner of 25th and Charlotte streets puts it right in the heart of Kansas City’s burgeoning Health Sciences District. The vision for this project extends far beyond just brick and mortar; it’s conceived as a future hub for education, innovation, and health services.
UMKC’s initiative aims to enhance educational opportunities for both medical and dental students, while also paving the way for interdisciplinary research partnerships. Imagine a place where future healthcare leaders can collaborate seamlessly to create breakthroughs that can change lives!
In addition to serving as an educational anchor, the new facility will host clinical services for University Health. It promises a range of innovative features, including a data and analytics innovation center and the UMKC Health Equity Institute. Plus, there will be dedicated spaces for biomedical engineering. This building is not just about learning; it’s about actively contributing to the future of healthcare.
Such a grand project requires substantial backing, and UMKC has secured support from various sources. Notable funding includes state support thrown in with $10 million in federal funding secured by former U.S. Senator Roy Blunt. Community support is also noteworthy; the Sunderland Foundation contributed $30 million, while the Hall Family Foundation chipped in $15 million. Both foundations have also been key players, previously contributing a staggering $75 million each to the Children’s Mercy Research Institute.
The Health Sciences District, officially launched in 2017, is set to transform into a leading regional medical center. By promoting economic growth and creating countless new jobs, it aims to benefit the entire Kansas City community. This 18-block area, known as Hospital Hill, is already home to significant healthcare organizations such as Children’s Mercy Hospital and University Health.
The city is also eager to contribute to this growth. Kansas City is exploring development options for three tracts of land, totaling nearly 9 acres, in the Health Sciences District. The aim is to encourage proposals that emphasize affordable housing, mixed-use developments, and support for the Troost MAX bus line.
With construction already in progress, the Healthcare Delivery and Innovation Building is expected to open its doors next year. Managed by Kansas City-based McCownGordon Construction, this project is not just about building; it’s about building the future. As the new facility takes shape, it’s sure to serve as a catalyst for growth in the UMKC Health Sciences District, greatly enhancing both educational and healthcare services in the community.
Kalifornia might be known for its California dreaming, but here in Kansas City, we are busy laying the groundwork for a bright future in healthcare innovation. Keep your eyes peeled for more updates on this remarkable journey!
