But if there’s one thing we know from GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium, it’s that Kansas City Chiefs fans have earned a reputation for their warm welcomes. Whether you’re sporting your team’s colors or just blending in, you’ll hear plenty of stories about the friendliness of Chiefs fans.
This sense of hospitality seems to stretch far beyond just the confines of the stadium! A new national study finds that Kansas City is ranked as the fifth-nicest city in the entire country! This might just be the warm Kansas City spirit that locals and visitors alike have been talking about for years. Conducted by a language teaching service, the study involved surveys from residents across 46 major cities in the United States, diving deep into how people perceive rudeness in their neighborhoods.
How Was the Data Collected?
The survey certainly wasn’t a small undertaking. Participants were asked how often they witness rude behaviors and their feelings towards both native residents and those who’ve moved into the city, known as “transplants.” Based on their responses, a rudeness score was calculated for each city on a scale of 1 to 10—10 being the rudest. Holding a score of 6.78, Kansas City sits comfortably at the bottom of the rudeness rankings. Now that’s something to smile about!
Who’s Nicer Than Kansas City?
So, who out there is a little nicer than our beloved Kansas City? The cities that claimed the top spots ahead of Kansas City include:
- Omaha, Nebraska with a score of 6.24
- Minneapolis at 6.35
- San Diego hitting 6.68
- Columbus, Ohio with a score of 6.70
Meanwhile, some cities found themselves struggling on the other end of the spectrum. Miami takes the cake for being the rudest city in the U.S. with a whopping score of 9.88, followed by:
- Philadelphia at 9.12
- Tampa, Florida hitting 8.88
- Louisville, Kentucky at 8.72
- Oakland, California scoring 8.67
What Behaviors Are Considered Rude?
The study also peered into the types of actions that residents deemed rude. The most common annoyances included a lack of care for others, being excessively loud in shared spaces, and not being self-aware of one’s surroundings. Interestingly, perceptions varied significantly depending on age; older individuals were more likely to believe that transplants are ruder than locals. And it seems driving habits also played a role in the rudeness evaluation—six out of ten participants admitted to witnessing drivers ignoring basic road etiquette.
