Kansas City to Launch First Free Adult High School, Transforming Community Education Access

Exciting News in Kansas City: A Free Adult High School is on the Way!

If you’re in Kansas City, there’s a wonderful new development that is sure to make a positive impact in the community! Goodwill is not just about second-hand clothes and household items; they’re taking a huge step by opening the first free adult high school in our region. That’s right, folks—education is coming to the heart of our city!

Turning Old Buildings into Learning Opportunities

So, where’s this school going to be? An empty building off of I-435 and Bannister Rd. will undergo a remarkable transformation over the next year. This space, which has seen a number of different lives—from a former sports facility to a Walmart—is going to be reimagined as a place where adults can come and earn their high school diploma.

Part of the building will still serve as a Goodwill Outlet, while the other section will be designated for the school, complete with a separate entrance for students. This dual-purpose setup is a fantastic way to ensure that the mission of Goodwill continues while also serving the educational needs of the community.

The Excel Center: A New Way to Learn

Goodwill’s Chief Mission Officer, Anita Davis, shared the vision for this innovative learning space, emphasizing that, “You’re actually going back and completing your credits. You’re going to science class, you’re doing projects, you’re going to math.” This isn’t just about passing a test; it’s about a real education experience.

Unlike traditional programs that may only provide a GED, this free adult high school will grant students a full high school diploma. Any resident of Missouri aged 21 and older is eligible to apply, which opens the door for many individuals looking to enhance their education and job prospects. With plans to start with approximately 250 students, seven teachers, and a director, the school aims to create a supportive and enriching environment.

Why This is So Important

The journey to establish this school has taken years of hard work and collaboration. Finding the right location and getting all the necessary approvals were significant challenges along the way. As Davis points out, it was especially important to ensure that “public schools started first so that parents aren’t competing with their students starting.” This mindful approach helps everyone transition into the school year peacefully.

Interestingly, Kansas City is joining a wave of change, as there are already six Excel Centers open on the eastern side of the state. This upcoming center will be the first of its kind in our area, making it a groundbreaking initiative for the community.

How You Can Help

As of now, Goodwill is actively fundraising to make this dream a reality. One easy way you can contribute is by rounding up your total during your next shopping trip to Goodwill or by making a donation directly on their website. Every little bit helps, and it all goes to support this incredible new chapter for adults looking to further their education.

Looking Ahead

The opening of the Excel Center is set for August 2025, so mark your calendars! This initiative not only aims to provide education but also to uplift our community. This school will empower individuals to take charge of their futures and gain the skills they need to succeed in today’s ever-evolving job market.

What’s happening at Goodwill is more than just retail; it’s about changing lives and providing opportunities. Stay tuned for more updates as this project progresses, and get ready for some exciting changes in Kansas City!
