Kansas City, Mo. — In a remarkable act of bravery, an off-duty firefighter became an unexpected hero by saving a 7-year-old child from drowning during a critical moment on Monday evening.
At approximately 5:30 p.m., emergency services were alerted to a potential drowning incident at a residence near North Overland Drive and Northwest 81st Terrace. Witnesses reported to the responding teams that the young boy had been immersed underwater for an uncertain period.
Upon hearing the commotion from nearby, the off-duty firefighter rushed to the scene. He quickly sized up the situation and began to administer CPR before calling 911. Thanks to his prompt response and training, the child was soon breathing and had a pulse when the Kansas City Fire Department (KCFD) arrived.
The KCFD teams worked alongside the firefighter, ensuring the child was stabilized and promptly transported to Children’s Mercy Hospital. Fortunately, the young boy is reported to be in stable condition, although the long-term effects of the incident remain unknown.
The KCFD expressed appreciation for both the bystanders who called for help and the off-duty firefighter’s rapid response, stating, “Immediate CPR was crucial in saving the child’s life.” This incident highlights the importance of being prepared and knowing how to respond in emergencies.
This heartwarming event serves as a reminder of the everyday heroes in our community and underscores the significance of public vigilance by keeping an eye on children around water. Community members are left relieved and grateful for the quick actions that ultimately saved a young life.
