Concerned citizens in Kansas City plan to protest as city firefighter Dominic Biscari officially returns to work though facing an Alford Plea for causing the death of three individuals in a car crash incident.
On the night of December 15th, 2021, Dominic Biscari ran a red light at the Broadway and Westport Rd. intersection in a fire truck as his unit was responding to a house fire. The accident claimed the lives of Jennifer San Nicolas, Michael Elwood, and Tami Knight after Biscari’s firetruck collided with their Honda.
While Biscari received a supervised probation and is granted permission to drive a vehicle according to court records, many, particularly those known to the deceased, question the consequences and worry about the potential risk to more lives.
Laura Norris, a former employer of Jennifer San Nicholas and Michael Elwood, leads the demand for justice, accountability, and change after learning that not only can Biscari return to his work as a firefighter, but he would also be allowed to drive firetrucks on call.
“It was his first time behind the wheel, and he killed three people,” Norris said. “I feel like the minimum they can do is tell us he won’t drive again and that can be some form of justice.”
Reports indicate that Biscari had been involved in driving-related complaints before the incident, such as driving too fast, even when transporting patients, causing his staff to be thrown around in the back of an ambulance. Despite these complaints and prior incidents, Biscari was allowed to drive on the night of the fatal accident.
Protestors also call for the city’s implementation of sensors at every intersection that can detect incoming emergency vehicles to caution other drivers. Those calling for change argue that such a system could have prevented the fatal incident in December. This incident, they argue, could have been anyone, and they believe it should not have been anyone.
