Welcoming a new baby into the world is often a joyous occasion filled with excitement and love. However, for one Kansas City family, the arrival of their newest member has been overshadowed by tragedy. Tera Cowan, who gave birth to her daughter Emersyn earlier this month, never made it home from the hospital. This unexpected loss has left her family grappling with grief and seeking financial assistance to navigate the challenging times ahead.
For many years, Tera and her husband hoped to expand their family. After trying for over 15 years to have another child, they finally welcomed Emersyn into their lives on September 4. Tera already had a 16-year-old daughter, who is eagerly looking forward to celebrating her birthday soon. The joy of having a new sibling was palpable in the household.
Tera underwent a scheduled C-section, a procedure that many expect to go smoothly. However, just days after the surgery, her health began to decline. Morgan, who is Tera’s sister-in-law, shared, “She came out of the O.R. and once we got to her, she had been in the room half the day and was sick. She couldn’t keep anything down, including water.
The family started to worry as Tera’s condition worsened. Despite monitoring by her geriatric OB, the symptoms persisted. “We knew something wasn’t quite right,” Morgan said. “I didn’t know if this was the drugs she was on to help with pain or if it was the anesthesia. That uncertainty made me angry because I didn’t know to push for more information.”
After eight long days of suffering, doctors finally performed exploratory surgery, which unveiled a serious complication—a nick in her colon. Tragically, by then, it was too late. Tera was in the grip of sepsis, a life-threatening condition that occurs when the body reacts dangerously to infection. “Her body was too far gone to fight that,” Morgan lamented. “Infection doesn’t just bloom in one night; it had already set in. They should have been able to find that much sooner.”
Now, Tera’s husband is left as the sole provider for their infant daughter Emersyn and their special needs teenager. The family lives modestly, equipped only with a few basic baby supplies. At this moment, the urgent need is for financial support to cover medical bills and necessary expenses.
Friends and family are heartbroken by this sudden loss, and they remember Tera as a beautiful soul with a welcoming smile and kind words for everyone she met. To help ease the family’s burden during this tragic time, a GoFundMe account has been established. It seeks to assist with not only medical expenses and memorial services but also the ongoing support of Justin, Tera’s husband, as he faces the overwhelming task of raising their daughters alone.
The heartfelt message shared on the fundraising page reads, “Tera was a beautiful soul and a great friend to many, always greeting everyone with a smile, a kind word, or a hug. Her friends and family are completely devastated at this untimely loss.”
As the family comes to grips with their loss, they are also looking forward with hope for Emersyn. “My hope for her is that she carries on that joy and laughter,” Morgan wistfully stated. With awareness and support from the community, they can help ensure that Emersyn grows up feeling the love her mother wished for her.
If you wish to help Tera’s family during this heartbreaking time, consider contributing to the GoFundMe account to assist them through the many challenges ahead. Your generosity can bring a bit of comfort to a family in need of support and healing.
