In a dramatic chapter unfolding in the heart of Kansas City, a long-standing family dispute has taken a new twist as James Lucas has filed a third lawsuit against his son, Peter Lucas. This ongoing legal battle, which seems straight out of a soap opera, revolves around allegations of embezzlement and a web of financial entanglements that have strained the family bonds to their breaking point.
This saga begins in February 2006, when James Lucas was brought on board as the chairman and CEO of Dadson Manufacturing Corp., a company producing medical devices that had ties to his then-wife’s family. James wasted no time in hiring his son, Peter, for not one but two major roles—chief operating officer and chief financial officer. It was a classic family affair, as James had previously given Peter opportunities at other businesses he owned.
Fast forward to January 2017, a dark cloud loomed over the Lucas family as Pamela Lucas filed for divorce from James just days after James was ousted from Dadson. This sudden turn of events kicked off a flurry of legal action, with James seeking nearly $446,573 in compensation from Dadson for unpaid debts and loans. But the twists keep coming!
In January 2019, a jury sided with James for his claim of deferred compensation but then delivered another blow. They found him guilty of breaching his fiduciary duties regarding approximately $400,000 that mysteriously vanished from the company’s assets. As a result, James was ordered to pay back $239,263 to Dadson. Just when it looked like the storm might calm, James and Pamela settled their divorce, leaving the company disputes—at least for the moment—on the back burner.
But patience was not a virtue for James. In December 2019, he discovered what he claimed was evidence of his son siphoning off company funds. He quickly filed yet another lawsuit, accusing Peter of making unauthorized charges. However, Peter wasn’t going down without a fight. He argued that during the divorce settlement, both he and James had waived any claims against each other—something the court agreed with, blocking James from pursuing the claims further.
Not one to back down, James filed a new lawsuit in October 2020, claiming Peter had pilfered $400,000 from Dadson and used it for personal expenses after his termination. But yet again, the court dismissed James’ case in February 2023, leaving Peter victorious and even awarding him court costs. It was turning into a real David versus Goliath tale—only this time, David seemed to be coming out on top.
As the saga edges into November 2023, James is making another attempt, filing suit against both Dadson and Peter in Jackson County Circuit Court. He claims Dadson was illegally operating in Missouri after its dissolution in June 2022 and that they mishandled his legal settlement offers. It seems James isn’t just looking for revenge; he’s also aiming for a cash windfall. He’s seeking repayment of a $167,507 loan along with claims for damages totaling at least $100,000.
As of now, both Peter and Dadson have yet to respond to this latest lawsuit. With a history so fraught with tension, it’s clear the Lucas family is far from resolving their issues. As we watch this legal drama unfold, it raises questions about family, trust, and the impact of business on personal relationships. Only time will tell if this family can mend their bonds—or if they’ll face another courtroom showdown.
Stay tuned for further updates as we keep our eyes on this unfolding case of family turmoil and courtroom battles.
