Kansas City, MO – The partnership between Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) and Americold witnessed a remarkable advancement with the groundbreaking of a new $127 million facility in Kansas City, Missouri. The ceremony, conducted on Tuesday, saw the attendance of state officials, delegates, and prominent leaders from both organizations.
Announced in February, the partnership will lead to the development of a new 335,000-square-foot facility with a massive investment of $127 million by Americold. This development is aimed at bridging the markets of the U.S. and Mexico with an efficient supply chain connection. Furthermore, it is projected to bolster the local economy by creating 187 new jobs.
In his remarks at the ceremony, Missouri Governor Mike Parson emphasized the significance of the project for the state’s economy. “It’s the infrastructure we’re building that is why these companies are coming here. It’s because of the things we are doing to prepare the next generation to be the workforce of tomorrow and it takes the cities, the counties and the state, all the entities involved to make this day count,” stated Parson.
In addition to serving as a major hub for storage and transportation, the facility will also augment CPKC’s Mexico Midwest Express (MMX) service. MMX marks North America’s only single-line rail service offering for refrigerated shippers between the U.S. Midwest markets and Mexico.
The facilities at MMX service will play a vital role in revolutionizing the supply chain ecosystem of North America. The strategic collaboration between Americold and CPKC aims to provide more freight on trains, further cementing their positions as influential entities in the logistics field.
Reflecting on the significance of this collaboration, Keith Creel, President and CEO of CPKC, encompassed the mutual benefits envisaged from this project. He stated, “We will create a logistics hub that generates value and new supply chain opportunities while putting more freight on trains.”
George Chappelle, CEO of Americold, echoed Creel’s sentiments in articulating the mutual benefits reaped from the symbiotic relationship between the two companies. “By partnering with CPKC and utilizing their rail network we are enabling our customers across North America to store and transport goods much more efficiently and effectively than ever before. The facility in Kansas City is an exciting start to this partnership. We look forward to further collaboration with CPKC to provide world-class service to more customers and strengthen the food supply chain.”
