Newly Appointed Startland Director Plans to Impact Kansas City Through Skill-Building and Empathy-Based Education

‘This is where I belong’: How Startland’s newly hired skill-building, education leader plans to forge impact with empathy

In Kansas City, Christina Hocker has recently joined Startland as the Director of Education and Skill-building. This notable transition marks her unwavering commitment to foster educational ecosystem-building work that supports Kansas Citians of all ages.

Hocker’s Journey with Startland

Hocker’s affiliation with Startland began in 2021, when she assumed the position of teacher development and school partnerships manager. Despite moving on to develop her experience within the Lee’s Summit R-7 School District, her steady inclination towards the work done by Startland prompted her return.

“The practical, smart thing for me to do was to stay within a district and take my retirement,” Hocker said with a laugh. “But there was this feeling gnawing at me all the time that this work is what is in my heart and my soul and is what drives me in education. This is where I belong.”

A Vision for Skill-Building and Education

At Startland, Hocker will be at the helm of numerous prominent programs such as the Social Change Internship, the Entrepreneurial Teacher Accelerator, and various innovation challenges. As part of her role, upcoming initiatives will include expanding Startland’s skill-building program to cater to more than just students and teachers, thus striving to empower people of diverse backgrounds.

Gaining Trust and Building Momentum

While acknowledging the weight of expectations that accompany her new role, Hocker remains optimistic and dedicated. “I understand that there is a lot of outside noise anytime someone steps into a leadership role at an organization known for doing something really great — for a really long time,” Hocker noted.

“Those questions were answered and new questions will be too. All I’m asking of our community is for the chance to prove this enhanced vision for our work is not only necessary for the future of Startland — but essential to the growth of Kansas City.”

The Power of Empathy in Education

As a child growing up in Kansas City’s Italian community, Hocker resonates with the uphill battle faced by young people in underrepresented corners of the community. Her experiences are what drive her to ensure no child feels overlooked or unheard, and she aims to bring this ethos into classrooms through empathy.

Hocker believes in the importance of building a bridge of understanding between students and teachers through shared experiences. She deeply believes in providing young minds with the tools and guidance to translate their innate creativity into successful problem-solving — a goal she is eager to achieve at Startland.

“We’re expanding our skill-building programs, I am dedicated to ensuring that everyone — student to starter — has equitable access to the resources and mentorship needed to succeed as a starter, innovator, creator and in life.”

Looking Ahead

With Startland, Hocker is determined to make an impact on the lives of students, educators, and aspiring entrepreneurs alike. Her vision and dedication are moving testimonies of her commitment to empower Kansas City through skill-building and education. As she steps into her new role, the city and its people stand to witness a wave of transformation under her leadership.
