KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Several months following a significant cyberattack, the Kansas City Scout website and its adjacent live traffic cameras were restored this Tuesday.
The website and associated systems experienced a cyberattack on April 25, requiring all systems to be promptly shut down. The Kansas City Scout, a bi-state endeavor involving both the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) and Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT), sustained a significant overall disruption to its services. “Full-service restoration efforts are still underway,” expressed officials from both Departments.
The first phase of the restoration began in earnest on June 20, whereupon digital message boards started displaying real-time information. In spite of the website’s return, both MoDOT and KDOT cautioned that efforts to fully restore service are ongoing. Access to the KC Scout mobile app, real-time cameras on the MoDOT Traveler Map, media partner access to camera streaming, and the KDOT’s traveler map service (KanDrive.gov) all remain offline.
In a released statement, representatives from the DOTs and KC Scout expressed gratitude for the public’s patience during the service outage and during the subsequent restoration process. “The DOTs and KC Scout thank everyone for their patience during the service outage and as efforts toward complete service restoration continues,” they confirmed.
MoDOT and KDOT stated that they would share any updates regarding further restoration with the public. They urged users to stay vigilant and stay tuned for future announcements regarding the restoration of services, encouraging locals and commuters to check frequently for official updates and information, and to remain patient during these times of recovery.
The departments have also reminded the public about the dedication of their team members, and the considerable amount of time and effort that has gone into recovering from the cyberattack and restoring online services as quickly and securely as possible.
The incident has served as a reminder of the increasing threat posed by cyberattacks to public infrastructure. As the use of connected technologies continues to permeate every aspect of daily life, from traffic control to public transport and emergency services, the risk posed by would-be attackers also grows.
Security experts advise that it is essential for organizations to adopt a robust, proactive approach to cybersecurity, carrying out regular assessments of vulnerabilities, employing the latest security technologies, and testing systems for potential weaknesses. This will help to minimize the potential impact of a cyberattack and ensure systems can be restored as quickly and efficiently as possible following an attack.
