Kansas City Current Set to Transform Berkley Riverfront

In a vibrant twist for the sports and community scene, Kansas City is buzzing with excitement as plans unfold for the Kansas City Current’s new mixed-use district near the soon-to-be CPKC Stadium. This ambitious project is looking to connect locals and visitors alike, offering a dynamic blend of shopping, dining, and recreational activities that will make the riverfront a place to enjoy all year round, not just on game days.

Creating a Buzz Beyond Game Days

During a recent “State of Downtown” event, the Kansas City Current’s executive team provided insightful details about the development, marking a significant step in the establishment of a community hub that thrives even when the stadium isn’t hosting its anticipated 50 events each year. Scott McCubbrey, managing director of Marquee Development, shared details about the project’s first phase, worth around $200 million, which will include about 53,000 square feet of retail space designed to be “hyperlocal” in focus.

“We want to create an atmosphere that is lively and engaging, whether it’s a cozy brunch spot or a trendy fitness studio,” said McCubbrey, emphasizing the need for a thoughtful mix of local and national businesses. Whether you fancy a bite from a beloved local eatery or a visit to a popular national chain, this development aims to cater to everyone’s taste.

Building Community Connections

The project is not just about entertainment; it significantly aims to reconnect Berkley Riverfront to the surrounding neighborhoods. No one understands the importance of this as much as Lynn Carlton, a leader from Burns & McDonnell. She explained how the team is collaborating with the Missouri Department of Transportation to address traffic issues and improve access to the riverfront. “We want people to easily make their way here, whether they’re coming from the bustling Downtown or nearby neighborhoods,” she noted.

The need for enhanced infrastructure becomes even clearer considering the area’s complicated history. Mukul Sharma, managing director with Palmer Square Capital, noted the challenges the team faced while excavating for CPKC Stadium, revealing everything from remnants of old structures to tires, highlighting the area’s long history of neglect. “It’s time to transform this waterfront from a dumping ground into a vibrant community space,” Sharma stated passionately.

Vibrant Programming for Everyone

What really excites city planners and residents alike is the vision of making the riverfront a destination for everyone. The designs include public gathering spaces that could host various events, from a morning yoga class to a lively outdoor concert. The goal is to create a village feel, where individuals can come together, no matter their age or background.

“We want to bring the city back to this waterfront; it’s not just about sports but creating a space for living, playing, and working,” Sharma added. The emphasis is on participation and community spirit, ensuring everyone has a place to enjoy the space.

Looking Ahead

As plans move forward, utility work for the first phase of the project is set to kick off by the end of this year or early 2025, with visible construction anticipated right as the Kansas City Current’s next season begins in March. Keep your eyes peeled for exciting announcements, such as the official name for the district, and the fantastic retail partnerships that are well on the way.

With such a promising vision in place, Kansas City Current and its development team are not just building a new area but are on a mission to revitalize the spirit of community along the Berkley Riverfront. Buckle up, Kansas City – the future is bright, and it’s just around the corner!
