Local favorites Swordfish Tom’s and Drastic Measures are adapting to recent losses while embracing upcoming takeovers. Meanwhile, Slow Rise Doughnuts is creating buzz with a new partnership with Boulevard Brewing Co. As several restaurants transition, Mardi Gras festivities are set to delight the community. With so many happenings, Kansas City continues to showcase its vibrant food culture.
With the city bustling and alive, Kansas City’s culinary scene is truly heating up! This week, however, comes with bittersweet news as beloved local cocktail bars face some tough times while also preparing for exciting upcoming events.
Both Swordfish Tom’s and Drastic Measures are experiencing some heartfelt losses with the passing of teammates Simone Mele and Justin Burnell. This will lead to irregular service hours and changes in operations for the bars this week. In an effort to keep spirits high, Drastic Measures is prepping for some fun takeovers this weekend with Jade Jaguar and Highball. Expect a vibrant atmosphere even as Swordfish Tom’s takes a breather and closes for the week.
Despite the challenges, Kansas City has no shortage of delicious treats to enjoy! One rising star, Slow Rise Doughnuts, continues to spellbind locals with their filled sourdough doughnuts, creating long lines during their weekend pop-ups—even in the chilly February air! And hold on to your hats! Due on March 9, Boulevard Brewing Co is teaming up with Slow Rise for the special launch of their Pandan Coconut Doughnut Ale, offering the famed doughnuts to enhance your tasting experience. Don’t miss this mouthwatering combo!
In other news regarding the dining scene, Kinship Cafe has made a significant move by closing its beloved Strawberry Hill location on February 27, preparing to relocate to Independence. They are calling on helpful volunteers to lend a hand during the move on February 28, so anyone who wants to pitch in can play a part in this transition! Meanwhile, Ixtapa Fine Mexican Cuisine is saying goodbye to its Overland Park location due to rising costs, but fear not—the original spot near Zona Rosa will remain open to satisfy cravings for delicious Mexican eats.
Another noteworthy change is coming from Toni’s Italian Restaurant in Olathe. Unfortunately, they’ll be closing due to major construction at Santa Fe and I-35. The good news is that their Shawnee location will still be welcoming guests, so Italian food lovers can still indulge!
Now for some celebratory news! The Brass Onion in Prairiefire is throwing a long weekend of Mardi Gras festivities through March 4, culminating in an exciting dueling piano performance on Fat Tuesday. If you’re feeling the festive spirit, Kansas City Live! will be hosting a free Mardi Gras celebration on March 1 from 4-8 PM, with contests, a parade, and delicious food available for purchase.
And that’s not all! On March 4, the Northeast Kansas City Chamber of Commerce is organizing a special gathering at J. Rieger & Company featuring tantalizing Cajun food and drinks for a small admission fee. Plus, on March 8, the AIDS WALK Open will present a fun-filled day with a walk, ride, putt-putt, and tasty food stops at various restaurants for those who register.
Also, mark your calendars for March 9, when a grand soirée called Muse will take place, celebrating women in food, drinks, & the arts while benefiting Girls on the Run. It promises to be a night to remember, all for a good cause!
As you can see, Kansas City’s culinary scene is truly an incredible mix of challenges and celebrations! From closures to grand openings and exciting special events, this city is never short on delicious flavors and moments to share. So, gather your friends, pick a spot, and dive into the rich experiences Kansas City has to offer this week!
