Kansas City Coffee Destination Prefix Transitions to New Downtown Location After Grandview Closure

Kansas City Coffee Scene Shifts: Prefix Opens New Location

In the bustling heart of Kansas City, one of the city’s favorite coffee destinations, Prefix Coffee, has made a significant move that coffee lovers will want to take note of. After closing its Grandview location on Friday, they’re gearing up to pour fresh brews in a new spot.

Goodbye, Grandview; Hello, Downtown

That’s right! Prefix will soon launch its operations on the first floor of The Grand apartment building, located at 1125 Grand Blvd.. This lively move signifies not just a change of address but also a passion for coffee and community engagement, proving that this coffee company is more focused than ever.

The Grand opening promises a cozy vibe with a few seats inside, offering patrons the perfect opportunity to sip on their java while enjoying a friendly chat. Even more exciting is the future addition of a drive-thru, making coffee runs a breeze! Prefix is set to utilize the drive-thru from a former bank tenant, emphasizing convenience for coffee crusaders on the go.

Meet the Coffee Connoisseurs

Now, you might be wondering who’s behind this charming coffee joint. Prefix is owned by three talented couples: Joel and Lindsay Friedrich, along with Joel’s brother Jonathan Friedrich and his wife Sarah, and finally, Colin and Melissa Dwyer. This close-knit team is passionate about every stage of the coffee journey, including roasting their own beans.

Coffee Dreams and Delicious Delights

If you’re a fan of delightful beverages, you’ll be pleased to know that Prefix has a myriad of drinks to choose from. They whip up everything from robust espressos and classic lattes to refreshing cold brews and soothing teas. Have you heard about their unique specialties? Wait until you try the 801, a heavenly blend of espresso hot chocolate infused with vanilla and hazelnut. Or perhaps, the Golden Latte, an enticing caffeine-free treat made with a turmeric spice blend, will tickle your taste buds. And let’s not forget their Espresso & Tonic, expertly paired with seasonal syrup—a delightful cranberry concoction, currently!

But that’s not all; their syrups are made in-house, allowing for a fresh and delectable experience in every cup. Speaking of deliciousness, Prefix also partners with Fox & Bull Baking Co. to offer an array of pastries that will surely tempt your sweet tooth. Picture this: flaky chocolate croissants, scrumptious Danishes, Pop-Tart-like delights, and warm cinnamon rolls. Yum!

Looking Ahead

With a vision that goes beyond just serving coffee, Melissa Dwyer emphasizes, “Whenever people walk through our doors, we have the opportunity to change their day for the better. We want to share the food that we love, the pastries that we love, the coffee that we love.” This heartfelt goal surely resonates with every patron who walks through their doors.

Meanwhile, the buzz doesn’t stop there! Starting in January 2025, Abby Van Vliet and Emily Ribeiro will join as co-owners, adding their own flair to the Prefix experience. Abby will be leading the charge at The Grand, contributing her unique perspective as Prefix continues to evolve.

A Note on Change

Changing tides come with challenges, and the announcement of the Grandview closure was not made lightly. Prefix shared the news via an Instagram post stating, “With a heavy heart, but an even clearer sense of resolve, we announce our official departure from Grandview…” The decision aligns with the original plan to close both coffee shops on the IHOPKC properties, hinting at the shifting dynamics within the community.

As Kansas City’s coffee culture continues to thrive, Prefix Coffee is a testament to resilience and passion, ensuring their aromatic brews and savory pastries bring joy to every customer they encounter. If you’re a coffee lover in the area, keep your eyes peeled for that grand opening—it’s one event you won’t want to miss!
