Grant Funds Enable Volunteers to Restore Over 100 Headstones in Kansas City Cemetery

A Community Effort in Union Cemetery

Kansas City, Mo. – In a remarkable display of community spirit, volunteers have rolled up their sleeves to clean and restore more than 100 headstones in Union Cemetery, thanks to an 800-dollar grant from Freedom’s Frontier National Heritage Area. The project aims to enhance the historical preservation of this important site.

Supplies and Services Funded by the Grant

The Union Cemetery Historical Society announced the exciting news on Saturday, August 17. The funds are being utilized to purchase essential cleaning supplies such as D2 Cleaning Agent from Atlas Preservation, brushes, buckets, and gloves – all necessary to safely clean various types of stone.

Connecting History to the Community

According to a spokesperson for the society, this initiative aims to provide a hands-on approach to history. “Not everyone enjoys reading about history from a book,” the spokesperson explained. “We have found ways for people to engage with history in a more interactive way.”

Educational Opportunities and Community Involvement

The Union Cemetery Historical Society is also offering classes on proper cleaning techniques, discussing the importance of maintaining headstones, and providing an opportunity to learn about the lives of those buried there. During these sessions, volunteers are educated about safety precautions and which markers should not be cleaned.

Making a Significant Impact

Over the past month, diligent volunteers have successfully cleaned over 100 headstones. The grant has facilitated group cleaning days, extra instructional classes, and personal tutorials aimed at deepening the community’s understanding of the city’s rich history and the importance of its preservation.

Conclusion

The restoration initiative at Union Cemetery demonstrates the power of community cooperation and grants in preserving local history. As volunteers continue their work, they are not only restoring headstones but also creating a lasting legacy that honors the past.
