In a wave of good news for Kansas City, the former Best Buy building located near the Legends Outlets is finally getting a fresh start with a new owner! After years of sitting empty and facing challenges in finding tenants, the space is about to see some action. The purchase has been made by a fitness powerhouse – Planet Fitness – which plans to occupy roughly half of the 46,538-square-foot building.
The building, situated at 10500 Parallel Parkway, has a fascinating history. Best Buy opened the location back in 2009, but unfortunately, it shuttered its doors just three years later, along with many other stores across the country. For the past decade, the building remained untouched, and plans for new tenants were thwarted by the recent pandemic.
However, that’s all about to change! In a press release from Block & Co. Inc. Realtors, the investment group confirmed the sale of the building and the exciting news that Planet Fitness will commence construction immediately. The fitness center will take on about 25,000 square feet of space, leaving the remainder available for lease to other potential businesses.
As of March, Planet Fitness has been on a roll, making contractual commitments for around 1,000 new centers. With an impressive membership base of 19.7 million and 2,617 locations across the country, it’s safe to say they know a thing or two about fitness! Their report for the second quarter showed a significant revenue increase to $300.9 million, up from $286.5 million the year before. This shows not just growth for Planet Fitness, but also a thriving interest in health and fitness among the community.
The Speedway Shopping Center is a vibrant area already, boasting an impressive 850,000 square feet of retail space, anchored by popular stores like Walmart Supercenter and Sam’s Club. Not only that, but it’s just north across Parallel Parkway from the Legends, making it a hotspot for shopping and leisure activities.
But there’s even more on the horizon! The American Royal, known for its agricultural events and entertainment, has plans to construct a year-round complex nearby. The first phase of this exciting project is set to be completed by early 2026, making the area even more attractive for residents and visitors alike.
This is truly a moment of transformation for the former Best Buy building and the surrounding community. With Planet Fitness moving in, there’s a renewed sense of optimism in the air. It’s not just about a new fitness center; it’s about bringing people together and fostering a healthier lifestyle! That’s a win for Kansas City!
The team at Block & Co., led by David Block, Max Kosoglad, and Alex Block, successfully negotiated this deal, and we can’t wait to see what’s next for this rejuvenated spot in our city. Here’s to new beginnings and vibrant community spaces!
