Meet Daniel Edwards, a local hero who is committed to tackling a critical issue in his community: affordable housing. Having grown up in construction, it’s no surprise that this journey began when he tagged along with his grandfather to a lumber yard at just five years old. Fast forward to today, Daniel is on a mission to reshape the landscape of housing in his beloved urban core.
With a degree in architectural engineering from the Missouri University of Science and Technology, Edwards returned to Kansas City with a keen eye for spotting opportunities where others see challenges. He saw a glaring gap in affordable housing options for middle-class families, which sparked an idea into motion. Together with his wife, Ebony Edwards, they rolled up their sleeves and set to work acquiring land while also planning to expand their lumber yard into a processing facility dedicated to prefabricated homes.
Edwards is focused on a critical aspect of the affordable housing dilemma: the cost. By taking control of materials and production processes through his lumber yard, he aims to cut down costs for local residents significantly. Currently, he operates the Robert Wiley Material Supply, commonly known as Eastside Lumber, which he purchased in 2020. It’s not just a business to him; it’s a pathway to make a difference for families struggling to find a quality home.
The statistics paint a concerning picture. Kansas City needs at least 60,000 new homes, but tragically, only about 112 homes are being built each year in the urban core. So, what’s Edwards’ grand plan? He’s determined to transform his lumber yard into a manufacturing facility capable of remarkably speeding up home construction. His forward-thinking approach could reduce the time for home installation from an arduous six weeks to a jaw-dropping two days!
To realize this ambitious vision, Edwards and his team are working on raising a $50 million fund, having already secured $10 million in commitments for the initial phase. Their goal is a bold one: produce the first 500 prefabricated homes within the next four years! This kind of initiative could reshape neighborhoods and provide much-needed stability.
Edwards understands that improving housing is about more than just buildings; it’s about fostering stability and economic development in the community. This commitment to community spirit resonates with ongoing city initiatives, including the Parade Park Homes project, which will create over 1,000 affordable housing units within a $300 million budget. This project aims to thoughtfully mix various housing types to cater to both affordable housing and senior living, all while ensuring the legacy of the existing community is preserved.
