The magical city of Kansas City is all set to embrace the holiday spirit as the curtain rises on the beloved annual production of “A Christmas Carol.” This year marks a special milestone, as the Kansas City Repertory Theatre welcomes back familiar faces and exciting newcomers in what has become a festive tradition since its debut in 1981.
Now, if you’re a regular at the Rep or just someone who enjoys a good holiday story, you’re probably smiling at the mention of Gary Neal Johnson. This Kansas City treasure has been a consistent presence in the show and has played the iconic role of Ebenezer Scrooge since 2000—well, except for a brief hiccup in 2009 and a pause for the pandemic in 2020.
What makes Johnson’s return so special this year? Well, he’s not just any Scrooge; he’s become synonymous with the character, bringing his unique charm and depth to the role. Before donning the heavy chains of Scrooge, he actually took on the role of the narrator for a solid 14 years, showcasing his deep understanding of Dickens’ timeless tale.
This year promises not only the familiar echoes of Scrooge’s magical transformation but also fresh twists as the production embraces diversity through its casting, enriching the storytelling experience. Joining Johnson on stage is the talented Nedra Dixon, who will take on the role of the Storyteller, weaving through the narrative with her enchanting presence.
Behind the scenes, the incredibly skilled Jason Chanos, who serves as the associate artistic director of the KC Rep, will take the reins as director, ensuring each performance is a delightful journey that captures hearts and lifts spirits.
So, what do you need to know to experience this holiday delight? “A Christmas Carol” kicks off its much-anticipated run from November 23 through December 28, featuring a total of 40 performances that will get your festive feelings flowing.
Heads up! There will be no shows on Mondays (with the exception of December 23), and you can mark your calendars for break days on December 3, December 10, Thanksgiving, and Christmas.
All the magic happens at the beautiful Spencer Theatre, nestled in the heart of the University of Missouri-Kansas City campus at 4949 Cherry St. When it comes to ticket prices, expect to pay anywhere from $54 to $144, which includes a few fees, but hey, that’s a small price to pay for some holiday joy!
No need to worry about parking! Free parking is available in the faculty lot near Spencer Theatre, and there’s also parking on Levels 5 and 6 of the garage at 50th and Cherry streets. Plus, an elevated covered walkway on Level 5 makes getting to the theatre a breeze, even in winter weather!
