KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A former IRS employee from Grandview, Mohas faced a federal indictment for allegedly preparing over $200,000 in fraudulent tax returns in Kansas City.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Missouri announced the indictment of Sandra D. Mondaine, 64, of Grandview, Mo. A federal grand jury had charged her with preparing illegal tax returns that illicitly claimed more than $200,000 in refunds for her customers.
Court records indicate that Mondaine, who previously worked as an IRS contact representative before her retirement, was charged in a 39-count indictment by a federal grand jury in Kansas City.
Mondaine was charged with 39 counts of aiding and assisting in the preparation and presentation of false and fraudulent income tax returns. The charges involve 11 individuals, for whom she prepared at least 39 falsified income tax returns between the years 2018 and 2021. A total of approximately $237,329 was illicitly claimed.
The fraudulent returns Mondaine prepared allegedly contained fraudulent filing status, fraudulent Schedule A – Itemized Deductions, Schedule D – Capital Gains and Losses, and Forms 5695 – Residential Energy Credits. The inclusion of these and other fraudulent items on the tax returns reportedly allowed Mondaine to create unwarranted, substantial refunds for her clients.
In the past, Mondaine pled guilty to the theft of over $200,000 in disability benefits.
Further information about the case is yet to be released. Nevertheless, the incident provides a timely reminder to the public about the necessary vigilance required when dealing with tax issues. The legal progression into this high-profile tax fraud case will likely set a precedent for future tax felonies.
