Overland Park, Kansas — This weekend, Interstate-435 will undergo significant closures as crews work on the 69 Highway express project. Starting at 7 p.m. on Friday, both eastbound and westbound lanes of I-435 will be completely shut down between Quivira Road and Antioch Road. This closure will last through the weekend, reopening by 6 a.m. on Monday, August 26.
For those planning to travel eastbound on I-435, drivers are advised to:
Westbound travelers should follow these directions:
This weekend also coincides with the 22nd Annual Head for the Cure 5K event taking place in Corporate Woods. Organizers are expecting around 6,000 participants. Given the expected traffic flows and roadwork, attendees are urged to leave early to avoid congestion and to consider alternative routes via less traveled side streets.
This construction is part of the KDOT U.S. 69 Expansion Project (69Express), aimed at improving traffic flow and safety on one of the state’s busiest highways. According to project manager Steve Rockers, around 80,000 vehicles use this stretch of road daily. While they have successfully navigated similar closures in the past, this will be a full weekend closure, so all motorists are encouraged to plan ahead.
As with all roadwork, these plans are subject to change based on weather conditions. Traffic updates will be provided as needed.
