Kansas City residents learned some tough news on Monday as International Paper Co. announced its plans to close a packaging plant located on Clary Boulevard. This closure is set to have a significant impact, affecting 132 employees directly, as revealed in a WARN Act filing. But that’s not all; this is part of a larger wave of layoffs that will ultimately touch over 400 workers across four facilities in the United States, including locations in Cleveland, Tennessee; Rockford, Illinois; and Statesville, North Carolina.
This unfortunate announcement comes just two weeks after International Paper shared plans to lay off a staggering 650 employees nationwide. A representative from the Memphis-based company emphasized that the closures announced this week are separate from those earlier layoffs, reinforcing the gravity of the situation.
The Kansas City plant, known for its production on Clary Boulevard, is scheduled to officially close its doors on or before December 18. While this news is disheartening, the company has assured that affected workers will be provided with severance packages, outplacement services, and access to mental health resources. It’s a tough transition, but the company is attempting to support their departing team members as much as possible.
For those who remain hopeful, there is a silver lining. International Paper has stated that all impacted employees can apply for positions at other company facilities. A spokesperson mentioned, “We greatly appreciate the many contributions our departing team members have made during their time with IP.” This sentiment echoes the company’s commitment to valuing their workforce, even as they face necessary changes.
As part of its restructuring efforts, International Paper has developed a plan for a smooth transition of production from the affected sites to other locations. They reassured customers saying, “We will work closely with our customers throughout this process to ensure they continue to receive the high service levels they expect from us.” This proactive approach is crucial for ensuring that customer satisfaction remains high in the wake of significant changes.
International Paper has had a robust fiscal performance with an impressive $18.92 billion in revenue for their latest fiscal year. However, even strong financials can’t shield the company from the tough decisions that come with managing a vast network of production facilities. As the layoffs and plant closures move forward, the employee headcount in Memphis, the company’s hometown, is projected to shrink to 1,700 workers.
All of this transitional chaos comes on the heels of International Paper’s recent acquisition of London-based DS Smith for $9.9 billion, a deal that both shareholders have recently approved. It’s a challenging time for the company, which recently elected Andrew Silvernail as its new chairman and saw him take over as CEO just several months ago in May.
As Kansas City gears up for this impending change, the community’s focus will likely remain on supporting those affected by the decision. It’s never easy to hear that jobs are lost, especially so close to the holidays. Hopefully, with the assurances from International Paper and the community’s support, those impacted will find their footing in the coming months.
