Independence Square Transforms into Hallmark Dreamland with New Holiday Movie Debut

Gather ‘Round, Independence: Your Favorite Square Just Went Hallmark Stylish!

Independence, Missouri, is buzzing with excitement after the recent debut of the Hallmark movie, “Holiday Touchdown: A Chiefs Love Story.” This feel-good flick, showcasing the enchanting Independence Square, features a delightful twist: it transforms the beloved Square Pizza into a barbecue hotspot named “Norma & Nic’s.” Yes, you read that right! The iconic restaurant, at 208 W. Maple Ave, may not serve BBQ in reality, but it’s making waves on the Hallmark screen with its adorable vibe!

From Pizza to the Big Screen

Cindy McClain and her husband, Ken, are the proud owners of Square Pizza along with 14 other businesses in the area. The pair have dedicated years to revitalizing Independence’s Square, which has become a focal point for locals and visitors alike. They were thrilled when Hallmark came knocking this summer to film several key scenes across their spot, including the playful barbecue restaurant setting.

In this flick, we see the lovely Alana Higman (played by Hunter King) and handsome Derrick (portrayed by Tyler Hynes) meet in the bustling restaurant, experiencing an awkward moment after Derrick’s fingers plunge into some BBQ sauce—cue the giggles from the audience! To add to the fun, none other than Donna Kelce, superstar Travis Kelce’s mom, appears as a manager, decked out in a signed 87 jersey to boot!

Pictures and Pizza: A Hallmark Match Made in Heaven

After the movie’s release on Saturday, the restaurant has become a must-see destination. Cindy gushed about the boost in foot traffic at Square Pizza, saying, “Hallmark fans are coming from all over! Just yesterday, we had people from Oregon and Montana!” It’s true; these fans have a passion for all things Hallmark and flock to Independence to soak in the magic!

The film didn’t stop at just one business; Cindy’s other gem, Wild About Harry, transformed into a Chiefs-themed gift shop dubbed KC Corner in the movie. Its manager, Dustin Brooks, even landed a role as an extra in a scene, proving these local businesses really got in on the Hollywood action!

A Taste of Fame

While the filming caused a temporary pause for the shop, with both Square Pizza and Wild About Harry shuttered for a few weeks, Cindy handled it like a pro, even housing some actors and storing props in her empty buildings. “We considered it a risk worth taking. We hoped it would shine a light on the square,” she explained, her eyes gleaming with pride.

Indeed, Hallmark’s presence is helping reshape the city’s image. Cindy believes it is time for Independence to shed any negative stereotypes. “It’s personal to me. We’ve dedicated so much effort to making this place shine,” she said, “and seeing it used in a film meant so much for our community.”

Something Special in Independence

Not long before the Hallmark movie, the square made an appearance in a cheeky Chiefs parody called “Falling for Football.” This flashy promo captivated Hallmark executives and paved the way for filming. “When they called and mentioned it was happening fast, my heart raced!” exclaimed Cindy.

The film undoubtedly brought a touch of holiday cheer and magic, which has not only enchanted audiences but has also sparked curiosity and enthusiasm among visitors. Regardless of whether you have a penchant for romance, comedy, or simply wish to explore a charming town, Independence Square now stands tall, adorned with a sprinkle of Hallmark charm, inviting you to come and be part of its blossoming story!

Come Join the Fun!

So, if you’re looking for a cozy bit of Hallmark nostalgia, why not plan a trip to Independence? Stop by Square Pizza to munch on their unique rectangular pies—after all, who wouldn’t love “more pizza corner to corner?” The magic of movies is waiting for you right here in this vibrant downtown!
