EPA Takes Action against Sale of Illegal Disinfectants in Kansas City, Warns of Health Risks

EPA Cracks Down on Illegal Disinfectants in Kansas City

Kansas City, Kansas – Immediate Action Required

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has recently taken decisive action against multiple grocery distributors in the Kansas City area, ordering them to halt the sale of certain disinfectant products that have not been legally imported into the United States. This news comes as a major health advisory, aimed at protecting consumers from potentially harmful chemicals found in these products.

Distributors Under Scrutiny

Included in the EPA’s order are Pan-Y-Mas in Kansas City, Kansas and Estancia La Bodega based in St. Louis, in addition to others. The agency discovered that these distributors were selling Fabuloso products that contain glutaraldehyde, an ingredient that poses serious health risks and is not authorized for use in the U.S.

Health Risks Associated with Unauthorized Products

The illegal Fabuloso disinfectants in question have been linked to a variety of health issues, including:

  • Throat and lung irritation
  • Asthma and breathing difficulties
  • Dermatitis
  • Nasal irritation
  • Burning eyes and conjunctivitis

Importance of Product Registration

The EPA emphasizes that all pesticide products brought into the country must be registered. According to Meg McCollister, the Region 7 Administrator for the EPA, “The Agency is committed to protecting consumers, particularly those living in areas already overburdened by pollution.”

Additional Unregistered Products Found

Along with the Fabuloso products, the investigation revealed that Pan-Y-Mas was also selling unregistered Clorox Ropa stain remover and Estancia La Bodega was found with unregistered Clorox 48 Horas cleaner.

Consumer Advice

If you have recently purchased any of these products, it is crucial to check the label for an EPA registration number. Products lacking this information are not approved for sale in the U.S. If the product is unregistered, residents are encouraged to contact their local waste management service for safe disposal options.

Remaining Proactive

As consumers, it’s essential to remain vigilant about the products we bring into our homes. Understanding what to look for can help keep our families safe from substances that can cause harm. Keeping track of product registrations is just one step toward ensuring a healthier living environment.
