Idaho State Bengals Set to Face Northern Illinois Amid Winning Streak

POCATELLO — The Idaho State Bengals women’s basketball team is ready to return to the court after a 13-day break, taking on the Northern Illinois Huskies this Friday. The Bengals enter this matchup with momentum, having achieved a three-game winning streak following their recent 67-50 victory over the University of Missouri-Kansas City Kangaroos on December 13.

Game Highlights

In the victory against UMKC, senior guard Maria Dias led the Bengals with an impressive game-high of 26 points, complemented by four rebounds and two steals. Her execution from the free throw line, hitting 8-of-10 attempts, proved crucial in securing the win during the tense closing moments.

Team Performance and Challenges

The Bengals, currently holding a record of 5-5, have faced tough competition this season, with four losses attributed to powerhouse teams including California, BYU, San Diego State, and 19th-ranked TCU. The other defeat was a close match against Vermont during the Cancun Challenge held in Mexico.

These challenges have not hindered the team’s spirit as they prepare to dive into the Big Sky conference play. Following their clash with Northern Illinois, the Bengals will host Northern Arizona on January 2, marking the start of their conference endeavors.

Key Players to Watch

Currently, the Bengals are bolstered by the offensive contributions of Dias, who averages 10.1 points per game, and fellow teammate Halle Wright, who is contributing 10.8 points per game. Additionally, the bench scoring from Tadia Jordan adds crucial depth to the team’s repertoire.

Injury Update

There’s also optimism surrounding the Bengals with the anticipated return of Nika Lokica, who has been sidelined due to an upper-leg injury sustained in a match against BYU on November 16. Prior to her injury, Lokica was leading the team in scoring with an average of 10.3 points per game, making her return a significant boost for the squad.

Looking Ahead

Identified as a former champion, having won the Big Sky regular season conference title in the 2021-22 season, the Bengals have struggled in recent years and finished in the bottom half of the standings for the last two seasons. The upcoming games provide an opportunity to turn the season around and gain a competitive edge in the conference.

The fans are hopeful that the blend of seasoned players and incoming talent can drive the team toward a successful campaign as they look to improve their standing and performance in the upcoming matches.

With the excitement building and the team’s determination stronger than ever, all eyes will be on Pocatello as the Bengals resume their season against Northern Illinois.
