Developers unveil plan to breathe new life into historic KC Star building
Kansas City’s Staple Goes Through a Transformation
In a new-wave rejuvenation effort, developers in Kansas City have unveiled their master plan to rehash and invigorate the historic KC Star building, marking the start of an ambitious redevelopment project.
Erik Wullschleger of 3D Development shared the cool historic journey of the KC Star. He said, “The Kansas City Star was one of the great innovators of its time. You know, it just had a cool story to tell.” Now, the grand story continues with the promise of a new era.
The New Era of KC Star Building
The future of the approximately 250,000 square-foot building looks shiny and promising. The developers’ plans indicate a sophisticated revamp, designed to be a fusion of modern and classic. A European-style market, an enticing food hall, and more office spaces are in the pipeline to shape the edifice’s new image.
The $95 million venture leans on a heterogeneous combination of funding sources, such as grants and tax dollars, to bring the blueprint to life. With the return of office workers to the building, the local economy is likely to thrive. Wullschleger stated, “Bringing daytime office workers that will be here Monday through Friday, eating hamburgers, drinking beers at happy hour, attending First Fridays, you can imagine the impact that we believe this will have on the community.”
Local Reactions to the Developments
Anne Marie Francisco, a local businesswoman who has worked in the Crossroads district for 32 years, reminisces about days when the KC Star dominated the old structure at 17th Street and Grand Avenue. “All of these buildings were empty. They were abandoned. They looked horrible in that. We’ve seen all this area turn up to a lot of small businesses,” Francisco observed, highlighting her optimism about the future.
Other locals are equally hopeful. Longtime KC resident, Hank Meyer, shared, “I thought this whole area was going to get demolished but I love the Crossroads. It has huge potential like the arts, the First Fridays, it’s gonna be awesome if this is gonna be utilized correctly.“
Peeking Into the Future
The developers hope that the first phase of the revamp will reach its successful completion by the end of this year. They believe this redevelopment, given its prominent location and historical significance, will further drive people, density, and culture into the downtown area. This project should also encourage more developers to repurpose other historic buildings, empowering a new wave of urban revitalization.
The story of the KC Star building’s transformation is a testament to the resilience and innovative spirit of Kansas City. As the project proceeds, the city stands hopeful and eager to witness the new-phase historic KC Star building.
Please note: The plans are yet to be fully materialized, and the end product may vary based on external factors. Stay tuned for further updates.
