Inclusivity in Theme Parks

Kansas City Theme Park Faces Backlash Over Hijab Incident

Kansas City, Mo. – A popular theme park is under fire this week after an incident involving an employee and a guest’s hijab sparked controversy on social media. Videos circulating online show a woman, Hadil Alqarini, recounting her experience at Worlds of Fun as she tried to enjoy a ride with her son.

What Happened?

On the evening of September 13, Alqarini was excitedly waiting in line for the Prowler roller coaster with her child when an employee approached her with what she described as a surprising request. Reportedly, the staff member told her that she would have to remove her hijab – a religious headscarf she wears for personal and faith-based reasons – in order to ride the coaster.

Alqarini explained to the employee that her hijab was secure and that removing it was not an option for her. In her account, the employee suggested that she purchase a hat to wear instead. Confused and upset, Alqarini mentioned that she had visited the park before and had successfully ridden several rides, including the Prowler, without any issues related to her hijab.

A Supervisor Steps In

As Alqarini disembarked from the coaster, things took a positive turn when a park supervisor arrived. This supervisor acknowledged the misunderstanding and confirmed that Alqarini’s hijab was indeed secure enough for the ride. After this correction, the original employee approached her once more, admitting that he had been wrong in asking her to remove her hijab.

Even as this was unfolding, other guests waiting in line joined in, expressing their support for Alqarini and labeling the request as discriminatory. It’s not every day that you see bystanders rallying for someone; it’s a reminder of the importance of standing up for one another.

Park’s Response

In light of the incident, Worlds of Fun released a statement offering their apologies. They expressed that the matter had been escalated to upper management within Six Flags, the parent company of Worlds of Fun. As a gesture of goodwill, the park also provided Alqarini with free tickets and fast lane passes for her next visit, hoping to make amends for the unfortunate experience.

Interestingly, upon reviewing the park’s website, there seem to be no specific rules mentioned regarding clothing restrictions for rides. The Prowler’s webpage lacks any explicit dress code, and the general FAQ page merely states that most rides cannot accommodate “loose articles.” This makes the situation even more perplexing for many park-goers.

Guests Weigh In

Despite receiving free passes after the event, Alqarini has openly stated her reservations about returning to Worlds of Fun, conveying through her responses that the experience left a sour taste for her and her kids. “I’m not going back there,” she stated firmly.

The incident has raised questions among guests and an online community, urging a review of the park’s policies regarding religious attire and how employees are trained to handle such sensitive topics. Many believe that theme parks should be welcoming spaces for all, regardless of attire, especially when it pertains to deeply held religious beliefs.

As the fallout from this event continues, it has undoubtedly sparked discussions about inclusivity and respect in public spaces. For now, visitors to Worlds of Fun may want to pay closer attention to how their dress choices could be received, but hopefully, the park will work to ensure that such incidents do not happen in the future.

In moments like these, it’s crucial for public venues to create safe environments for everyone and to foster understanding through appropriate training for their staff. The hope is that moving forward, Worlds of Fun will work towards making it a truly welcoming place for all families and individuals, no matter what they wear.
