Kansas City Cultivates Underground Talent Through Innovative Creative Initiatives

Kansas City Ignites Hidden Talent with Creative Showcases

In the heart of Kansas City, a wave of creativity is swelling beneath the surface, thanks to the efforts of local artist and entrepreneur Bump Jonas. With a passion for shining a spotlight on underground talent, Jonas has launched two notable initiatives: his SprinkleSumSalt podcast and a monthly showcase event known as The Mecca—both designed to weave together the stories of local musicians, chefs, and small business owners.

A Space for Creatives

“When I came to Kansas City, I was blown away by the vibrant underground arts scene,” Jonas shared during an interview. Originally hailing from Houston, he found inspiration in how locals expressed themselves through street art, dancing, and various pop-up markets. This artistic energy fueled his desire to create a unique space where artists and entrepreneurs can connect and share their stories.

His podcast, SprinkleSumSalt, serves as a platform to “sprinkle some salt” on the untold stories of these creatives. The show started with live Instagram interviews and has since transitioned into a full YouTube series called Sit Down at Syke, where longer and more in-depth conversations with local stars come to life. Recent guests have ranged from the hip-hop group ScumLords of KC to Chef Alex Pope of Local Pig, who is busy crafting plans for the upcoming Museum of BBQ at Crown Center.

Connecting the Dots

Jonas connects with potential guests by attending various local events and pop-ups. “I’m all about talking to passionate people,” he explained. “Everyone is creative in their own way, and telling those stories is so important.” The music scene he discovered in Kansas City is a rich mix of trap, garage-band rock, and grungy beats, which Jonas believes is just beginning to gain mainstream attention.

The Mecca: A Performance Hub

In addition to his podcast, Jonas hosts The Mecca on the last Friday of every month at 7742 Troost Ave. This performance space features six to seven artists each night, all selected from those featured on his podcast. “Everything I make from The Mecca goes right back to the artists after covering venue and DJ costs,” he shared, emphasizing his commitment to supporting local talent.

The atmosphere at The Mecca is reminiscent of a speakeasy, invigorated by live performances and local vendors. Nearly a year into hosting the event, Jonas has established it as a vital gathering place for Kansas City’s underground creative community. “Consistency is key for me,” he remarked. “Having The Mecca every last Friday keeps this space alive.”

Empowering Local Artists

Reflecting on his journey, Jonas is deeply motivated by his desire to cultivate Kansas City into a thriving hub for independent artists and entrepreneurs. “There are tons of resources in Kansas City, but making money can still be a challenge,” he noted. Artists now more than ever are embracing an entrepreneurial mindset, so it’s crucial to pave sustainable paths for their success.

Through his work with SprinkleSumSalt and The Mecca, Jonas is actively nurturing an environment where local creators can thrive on their own terms. “Artists are becoming their own brands and building their teams,” he concluded. “I’m here to help make that happen.”
