This year, Memphis interior designer Carmeon Hamilton has outdone herself with a home that not only dazzles the eye but also pays homage to the vibrant culture of its new digs.
It’s hard to believe, but Hamilton had never set foot in Kansas City before being entrusted with this remarkable project. “It was my first time visiting and getting to know the city,” she shared excitedly. “Kansas City has this lively, Southern energy that makes you feel right at home.” And as the project unfolded, Hamilton poured her heart into creating a space that resonates with the community’s rich music scene and artistic flair.
The transformation was no small feat. The house, built in 1939, required a complete overhaul. With a talented team from Astoria Design Build, LLC, a woman-owned business, Hamilton let her creativity flow. “It’s crazy to think about designing a house from Memphis and having it turn out as beautifully as it did,” she remarked.
When the home is revealed in the one-hour special, “HGTV Urban Oasis 2024,” airing at 6 p.m. Central on October 4, viewers will be given an exclusive sneak peek at the design aesthetics that set this home apart.
For those eager to make this dream home their own, entries for the giveaway will open online on October 2, allowing fans to try their luck at winning the entire package valued at over $700,000. This includes the home, all furnishings, and a whopping $50,000 in cash. You can enter up until November 21—so get your browsers ready!
Hamilton drew from the city’s rich history and cultural nuances to create a space that feels like a warm hug. “I wanted to capture elements of Kansas City throughout the home,” she explained. This meant incorporating playful nods like limestone fence posts at the front—an echo of the local landscape—and art that reflects the city’s famous fountains.
One standout feature is the living room, illuminated by an inviting atmosphere, thanks to the tasteful blend of neutral tones, cozy leather accents, and warm wood elements. Above, ash beams provide a delightful contrast to the restful white oak floors. With a mix of fabrics like chenille sofas and velvet chairs, the space is as inviting as it is stylish.
One of Hamilton’s main focuses was making the home ideal for entertaining guests. “Living in Kansas City, it’s important for a home to reflect that lively atmosphere,” she stated, emphasizing that the backyard space plays a crucial role in this design. With ample seating, a large outdoor fireplace, and twinkling string lights creating a magical ambiance as the sun sets, guests will always feel welcome.
The kitchen is another gem—a lively blue space opened up from the previous awkward layout, featuring custom cabinetry inspired by local sports teams. “Once we realized how much blue is part of Kansas City’s identity, we just had to go with it,” Hamilton smiled.
As you venture through the house, you’ll notice each room tells its own story. The basement was transformed from a dark, damp area into a fabulous wellness center complete with comfy seating, a large projection screen, and even a dry sauna! “I’m jealous of the winner who gets to call this home!” Hamilton said, grinning.
Upstairs, the music lounge flaunts trombones as wall decor—a clever tribute to Hamilton’s son, who plays the instrument. And for those who love a bit of playful flair, the laundry room features cheerful shuttlecock motifs that will certainly tickle the fancy of local art enthusiasts.
Everywhere you look, there’s a touch of Kansas City magic. Whether it’s in the patterned wallpapers reminiscent of the ’70s in the main suite or the vibrant colors in the cozy bunk room designed for fun, Hamilton’s incorporation of the city’s essence is evident and enchanting.
