Kansas City has a special secret that’s warming the hearts of many amidst the challenges of cancer recovery. Local nonprofit, Peace Out Cancer, is stepping in to provide comfort and support for those battling this tough disease. Founded by two inspiring women, Amy Scanlon-Taitt and Marcia Moroney, this grassroots organization has made it their mission to help patients by providing them with a very special kind of recliner lift chair.
The journey through cancer can often be overwhelming, especially after surgeries where patients find themselves limited in what they can physically do. For many, using their arms to lift themselves from a seated position is simply not an option due to incision marks and drainage tubes. That’s where Peace Out Cancer steps in. The recliner lift chairs provided by this remarkable organization allow patients to rise up without straining their bodies, providing immense relief when every little bit of comfort counts. So far, they’ve helped around 2,000 patients find this much-needed support.
For those like Loni Norwood, who received the chair during her recovery from breast cancer, the service has proven to be a lifesaver. “I didn’t know anything about the breast cancer journey. I didn’t know anything about drains and what post-surgery looked like,” Loni reflected. She received the chair and treasured it for about three weeks. “It was a lifesaver. I didn’t have to strain. My movement was already so limited… I needed help.” In sharing her experience, Loni highlights how important it is to have support systems like Peace Out Cancer during such a vulnerable time.
When patients receive their chair, they don’t just get physical support; they also receive a notebook filled with thoughts and stories from previous sitters. This unique touch creates a sense of community and connection among those undergoing similar struggles. It’s a beautiful way for people to feel less isolated, knowing they are not alone in their experiences.
To continue helping those in need, Peace Out Cancer is hosting an exciting fundraising event on Friday, Oct. 4, at the beautiful Loews Hotel. The fundraiser promises fun and goodwill, with tickets available for just $35. The money raised will go directly towards ensuring that more chairs can be provided to individuals during their recovery process.
If you’re feeling inspired and want to contribute to this amazing cause, consider attending the fundraiser or spreading the word about their mission. The more people know about Peace Out Cancer, the more lives can be touched through their incredible work.
