Community members partake in cultural activities during the Lunar New Year celebration hosted by Hella Good Deeds.
Hella Good Deeds, a newly established nonprofit in Kansas City, aims to uplift the local Asian community while celebrating its rich cultural heritage. Founded by Béty Lê Shackelford, the organization emerged from outreach efforts in response to social challenges, including the Stop Asian Hate movement. With plans for various community events and activities, Hella Good Deeds seeks to create a safe space for dialogue, honor ancestors, and support local businesses, advocating for a stronger community. An exciting launch party is set for January 25, celebrating the Lunar New Year.
In the heart of Kansas City, a brand-new nonprofit organization is set to bring a wave of cultural pride and community support for the Asian population. Hella Good Deeds, founded by Béty Lê Shackelford, is on a mission to uplift the Asian community while celebrating the rich tapestry of Asian cultures. This organization aims to create a sense of belonging where everyone feels “held and hugged.”
Hella Good Deeds emerged from the community outreach efforts of Café Cà Phê, especially in response to the growing concerns brought on by the Stop Asian Hate movement after tragic incidents, including a heartbreaking shooting in Atlanta. As the organization officially transitions to a 501c3 nonprofit, the hope is to ensure sustainable support and access to vital funds that can empower the community for years to come.
Shackelford’s vision extends beyond fundraising. The aim is to honor not only the ancestors and descendants but also the broader community that ties everyone together. As Kansas City continues to grow and change, the need for a safe space where Asian voices can be amplified has never been greater. The nonprofit plans to encourage dialogue about the experiences of Asians, Asian Americans, immigrants, and refugees residing in the area.
Mark your calendars for the launch party on January 25, from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. at The Guild KC! This exciting event coincides with the second annual Lunar New Year Night Market, which promises food, fun, and festivity. Attendees will get a chance to witness traditional Lunar New Year celebrations, lion dancing, live performances, and even a special kids’ area offering cultural learning activities.
A community altar is also set to become a focal point of the event, inviting participants to honor their ancestors by sharing heartfelt photographs. This unique feature aims to encourage reflection and connection among the community, creating an environment of shared heritage.
As part of its mission, Hella Good Deeds is looking forward to hosting a variety of engaging events throughout the year. Some exciting plans include celebrations for Songkran New Year and honoring the 50th anniversary of the fall of Saigon. But that’s not all! Health fairs focusing on the older Asian generations, workshops on mental health, financial literacy, and self-defense are all in the pipeline.
The initiative goes beyond celebrating culture; it aims to foster connections not only within the Asian community but also to strengthen ties with the greater Kansas City community. Through education and allyship, Hella Good Deeds is committed to bridging gaps and building relationships that are vital for community-wide resilience.
There’s also an emphasis on supporting small, Asian-owned businesses while creating a collective network of existing nonprofits that are serving the community. The idea is to foster a spirit of collaboration rather than competition, ensuring that everyone succeeds together.
Despite the challenges that the community faces and the unfortunate negative incidents that have occurred, Hella Good Deeds aims to advocate for the Asian community decisively. Shackelford embodies the spirit of resilience and connection, understanding that community strength primarily comes from unity and mutual support.
As Hella Good Deeds gears up for its launch, the excitement is palpable. With the focus on representation, honor, and cultural celebration, the organization is poised to play a pivotal role in enhancing the lives of many within Kansas City’s Asian community. So, whether you’re Asian or an ally, everyone is invited to partake in the festivities and support this noble cause. After all, together, we can foster a community where everyone feels valued and celebrated!
