Kansas City Gears Up for Annual Heart Walk Weekend

Kansas City is buzzing with excitement as it prepares for the annual Heart Walk KC hosted by the American Heart Association this weekend. This heartwarming event aims to shine a light on cardiovascular health while bringing together survivors of heart disease and stroke, and their supporters.

Understanding the Heart Walk

According to Amanda Nichols, vice president of the American Heart Association in Kansas City, “Everyone’s affected by heart disease and stroke”. That’s why this event is so important! It’s not just about raising funds; it’s about ensuring that every person in the community has access to the resources needed to maintain a healthy heart. The money raised during the event plays a crucial role in supporting the organization’s mission and furthering education on cardiovascular health.

A Community Coming Together

The Heart Walk draws thousands from across the Kansas City area to show support for those fighting heart disease and to celebrate survivors. Laura Lopez, the executive director, expressed the sentiment beautifully, stating, “It is so impactful when you see these companies and individuals coming out with their matching T-shirts for their families and representing their love for one another—it’s life-changing.”

The Reality of Cardiovascular Disease

More than just a fun event, the Heart Walk serves a serious purpose. Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the United States. As Lopez emphasized, “It’s extremely powerful. I think everybody here has been impacted by someone from heart disease or stroke in some way, shape, or form.” When the Kansas City community comes together, even for a day like this, it really highlights the collective support and strength available to those battling this disease.

Fun Activities for Everyone

This year’s walk promises not just a meaningful cause but also plenty of fun! Children and families can look forward to a range of activities. “We have a kids zone area,” Nichols shared, adding that there will be numerous activities for people of all ages. Plus, there’s a special snacks area dedicated to survivors. “Our actual walk starts at nine,” she added, “It’s about a little over a mile, and if you want to do a little bit more, you can do it twice.”

Location and Timing

This year, the Heart Walk has relocated to the north lawn of the World War I Museum and Memorial. Participants are encouraged to arrive early, with festivities kicking off at 8 a.m. The atmosphere is expected to be vibrant and full of life as individuals come together for a shared cause.
