Grand Forks softball team celebrating on the field at Albrecht Field.

News Summary

On April 6, 2025, Grand Forks celebrated the grand opening of Albrecht Field, home of the University of North Dakota softball team. In a thrilling debut, the Fighting Hawks swept Kansas City with two hard-fought victories, marking a historic day for the program. Jackie Albrecht led the team with an impressive pitching performance, while her teammates contributed significantly to secure the wins. The event showcased the growth of women’s athletics in the community and set a positive tone for the upcoming season.

Grand Forks Celebrates with Softball Sweep at New Albrecht Field

On April 6, 2025, Grand Forks witnessed a major milestone as the University of North Dakota (UND) celebrated the grand opening of their brand-new on-campus softball complex, Albrecht Field. What a day it was! In two thrilling matchups against Kansas City, the Fighting Hawks took to the field and secured their first victories on home turf. UND didn’t just win, they achieved history with a pair of impressive victories—4-1 in the first game and 4-3 in the second.

A Star Performance

Leading the charge in the opening game was none other than Jackie Albrecht, the daughter of the key donors who helped bring the complex to life. It was a special moment for Jackie as she pitched a complete game and was a force to be reckoned with on the mound. Albrecht allowed just one hit and struck out seven batters, delivering a stellar performance that earned her the first win of the season, bringing her record to a much-needed 1-11.

But it wasn’t just Albrecht’s talent that helped UND shine. Player Callie Honig and Camryn Losota also made significant contributions, with each player recording two hits and an RBI. Hailey Bethune was on fire too, driving in two runs and scoring the very first runs in Albrecht Field’s history. What a way to kick off this new chapter!

Game Two Highlights

As the second game rolled around, excitement was in the air. The team demonstrated remarkable defensive resilience, highlighted by a stunning bare-handed play by shortstop Katie Joten—truly a display of athletic prowess. The Fighting Hawks showcased their defensive skills, executing critical plays that led to a tag-out at home and a double play in the nail-biting seventh inning.

Freshman pitcher Unity Nelson came in clutch to close out the game. After relieving Makaela Carr, she found herself in a tight spot with the bases loaded. But Nelson held her nerve, preventing Kansas City from tying things up and cementing the victory for UND. The intense atmosphere was palpable as fans watched their team secure the sweep!

The Stats and Standings

Despite the thrilling games, the Kansas City Roos struggled, with their only run in the first match coming from Lauren Parker. Unfortunately, the losses dropped Kansas City to an overall record of 4-27, placing them last in the Summit League with a lacking 1-7 record in the league. On the flip side, UND’s fortunes improved significantly; their overall record now stands at an encouraging 19-18, with a solid 4-4 record in the Summit League.

What’s Next?

Looking ahead, the excitement isn’t over yet! The Roos will be aiming for redemption as they prepare for the final game of their series against UND, set for April 9, 2025, at 1 p.m. Will the Fighting Hawks continue their winning streak at this brand-new venue, or will Kansas City turn things around? One thing is for sure—the inaugural games at Albrecht Field have set the stage for what promises to be a thrilling softball season!

In a day filled with unforgettable moments, Grand Forks soaked in the joy of witnessing women’s athletics come alive in a stunning new facility. Here’s to many more victories ahead for the Fighting Hawks and the continued growth of softball in our community!
